Obama's political master stroke on BLM Vrs Ranchers

Obama going in guns blazing would do nothing but make him look overbearing and ruthless. So holding back allows Republicans to take a side. Side with BLM who have gone through all the due process and have rule of law on their side, or stick with the ranchers. If they side with the ranchers they side with the anarchist conservatives and extremest of the party and alienate the moderates and independents. Side with BLM and piss off the extremest wing nuts while placating the moderates. It is a no win situation. The feds will get their pound flesh one day, might as well use this to split right and paint the party as extremest, something that the republican establishment had tried so hard to avoid since 12.

Great post!

You're actually spot on. Pro-Gun, Anti-Big Government, Anti-Tax are all main Republican platform issues anyway. Let them deal with it.

It is not okay for the Government to enforce the law with a scumbag who doesn't pay to graze his cattle on our public lands?

Yeah, that makes sense - maybe in Narnia.

Neither is OK. Also, if you're a male, the vaginal ultrasounds shouldn't be an issue, unless there's something you're not telling us.

Did you realize that approximately 90% of Nevada's land is federal owned property? Heck, at that rate, it's hard to let a fart and not offend some crony made up federal law. Plus, this whole incident is much deeper than a guy grazing his cows on federal property. Why don't you take a few moments to read up on the whole story so you can have a more objective - and not just a one-sided view that MSNBC educated you on.

What is this crony made up law that these ranchers are so upset about? Is it paying for fees to graze on public land? I guess squatters rights in now in the Republican platform.

I doubt very much that the decision about these fucking cows was made at the level of the oval office.

High level like this? I guarantee it! This had big implications, someone high up called this off.

Right. That's the same mindset that thinks that the White House is sitting around worrying about Benghazi, the IRS "scandal", or Obama's birth certificate. These things are only important in the Fox News universe, not reality.

You are correct. This is one "free pass" I'll give the oval office. Instead, this command was most likely given by Senate majority leader Harry Reid.

Watch as the details unfold deeper in the coming days. The press has been easing a bit on their support of Obama and Libs. Harry Reid? Might even be less support for him at this time.

There are no Federal elections in Nevada this year. By the time Reid is up for re-election, this sorry little episode will be little more than a footnote everywhere but in the most hard core right wing bubble. There would be nothing for Reid to gain by giving "this command", so it seems unlikely that he would.

Reality is far too prosaic to support all of the conspiracies people like to invent. The simple fact is that Mr. Bundy abrogated a contract he had with the BLM (i.e., grazing permits), because he didn't like a change in the law regarding an endangered species in 1993. He had no apparent issue with paying for the grazing permits on public land prior to that.

The smart move would have been to continue paying the fees but bring suit in court to rescind any changes in the law. By his impetuousness, he gave up legal standing to do so. This situation is tantamount to refusing to pay back a car loan, because you are dissatified with the dealer. The bank that holds your note won't find your argument very persuasive.

But legal briefs, stays, and rulings rarely attract the wild-eyed pistol wavers, so, when the slow moving wheels of bureaucacy finally brought this to a head, Mr. Bundy chose to "try" his case in the court of public opinion. However, the BLM backed down from seizing his physical assets, and took the wind out of his sails.

So that most fickle of things, public attention, will move on to the next cute animal video gone viral, the next celebrity meme, and the next right wing outrage, while BLM quietly seizes his financial assets, freezes his farming subsidies, and ties him up in endless court battles.

The problem with the lunatic fringe of the right, if I may endulge myself here, is that they seem to think they are dealing with Janet Reno. Their left wing boogie men today are far more crafty, and utterly ruthless.

Try this thought experiment. Imagine that someone grows up in poverty, works his way through law school by holding the night shift as a Capitol Hill policeman, and spends all but two years of his career as a public servant. Now imagine that this person’s current salary — and he’s at the top of his game — is $193,400. You probably wouldn’t expect him to have millions in stocks, bonds, and real estate.

But, surprise, he does, if he’s our Senate majority leader, whose net worth is between 3 and 10 million dollars, according to OpenSecrets.org. When Harry Reid entered the Nevada legislature in 1982, his net worth was listed as between $1 million and $1.5 million “or more,” according to the Las Vegas Review-Journal. So, since inquiring minds inquire, let’s try to figure out how Reid’s career in public service ended up being so lucrative. He hasn’t released his tax returns, which makes this an imperfect science, but looking at a few of his investments helps to show how he amassed his wealth.

In 2004, the senator made $700,000 off a land deal that was, to say the least, unorthodox. It started in 1998 when he bought a parcel of land with attorney Jay Brown, a close friend whose name has surfaced multiple times in organized-crime investigations and whom one retired FBI agent described as “always a person of interest.” Three years after the purchase, Reid transferred his portion of the property to Patrick Lane LLC, a holding company Brown controlled. But Reid kept putting the property on his financial disclosures, and when the company sold it in 2004, he profited from the deal — a deal on land that he didn’t technically own and that had nearly tripled in value in six years.

When his 2010 challenger Sharron Angle asked him in a debate how he had become so wealthy, he said, “I did a very good job investing.” Did he ever. On December 20, 2005, he invested $50,000 to $100,000 in the Dow Jones U.S. Energy Sector Fund (IYE), which closed that day at $29.15. The companies whose shares it held included ExxonMobil, ChevronTexaco, and ConocoPhillips. When he made a partial sale of his shares on August 19, 2008, during congressional recess, IYE closed at $41.82. Just a month later, on September 17, Reid was working to bring to the floor a bill that the Joint Committee on Taxation said would cost oil companies — including those in the fund — billions of dollars in taxes and regulatory fees. The bill passed a few days later, and by October 10, IYE’s shares had fallen by 42 percent, to $24.41, for a host of reasons. Savvy investing indeed.

In Nevada, the Name to Know is Reid

WASHINGTON — It was the kind of legislation that slips under the radar here.

The name alone made the eyes glaze over: "The Clark County Conservation of Public Land and Natural Resources Act of 2002." In a welter of technical jargon, it dealt with boundary shifts, land trades and other arcane matters -- all in Nevada.

For The Record

Los Angeles Times Friday June 27, 2003 Home Edition Main News Part A Page 2 National Desk 1 inches; 58 words Type of Material: Correction
Lobbyists -- A graphic accompanying an article in Monday's Section A on Nevada Sen. Harry Reid's lobbyist relatives incorrectly said that the University of Nevada at Reno paid $10,000 a month to the Lionel Sawyer & Collins law firm. In fact, the university paid the firm $40,000 in the last half of 2002, according to federal lobbyist reports.

As he introduced it, Nevada's senior U.S. senator, Democrat Harry Reid, assured colleagues that his bill was a bipartisan measure to protect the environment and help the economy in America's fastest-growing state.

What Reid did not explain was that the bill promised a cavalcade of benefits to real estate developers, corporations and local institutions that were paying hundreds of thousands of dollars in lobbying fees to his sons' and son-in-law's firms, federal lobbyist reports show.

The Howard Hughes Corp. alone paid $300,000 to the tiny Washington consulting firm of son-in-law Steven Barringer to push a provision allowing the company to acquire 998 acres of federal land ripe for development in the exploding Las Vegas metropolitan area.

Barringer is listed in federal lobbyist reports as one of Hughes' representatives on the measure that his father-in-law introduced.

Other provisions were intended to benefit a real estate development headed by a senior partner in the Nevada law firm that employs all four of Reid's sons -- by moving the right-of-way for a federal power-transmission line off his property and onto what had been protected federal wilderness.

The governments of three of Nevada's biggest cities -- Las Vegas, North Las Vegas and Henderson -- also gained from the legislation, which freed up tens of thousands of acres of federal land for development and annexation. All three were represented by Reid's family members who contacted his staff on their clients' behalf.

The Clark County land bill, which was approved in a late-night session just before Congress recessed in October, reflects a new twist in an old game: These days, when corporations and other interests want to cement a vital relationship with someone in Congress, they're likely to reach out to hire a member of the family.

Yes, the current federal law enforcement agencies are certainly more "crafty" today. Then again, the frustration level by American citizens has grown too. It's hard to tell where this would have really ended up if it carried out if the standoff had been drawn out a few more days and then all heck broke loose.

Americans are showing more and more that they are willing to die for their livelihood. Whether this gets appropriately demonstrated through the news outlets remains to be seen.

You're delusional. There are way less people willing to die, for any cause, in this country than there used to be.

Thank you. A voice of reason. Far too rare around here.
