The Weather Channel disappeared from DirecTV's channel lineup shortly after midnight on Tuesday, the latest escalation in a contentious contract negotiation.

The channel has tried to rally the public's support by reminding people that it is an emergency lifeline during severe weather.

"The Weather Channel isn't just another TV network. It's a must-have resource that keeps families safe," proclaimed a headline on Weather.com.

At stake, the channel wrote ominously, is a "critical life-saving community resource" for 20 million households."

Gee.....how will people survive not knowing the name of a coming snow flurry? TWC is shit now. I used to watch it a lot or at least had it on for background noise. Now it's just awful. It's the fashion channel with a bunch of stupid reality shows.

If you want to know if even a millimeter of snow is coming just check the FCPS website. They close at the drop of a hat.

These days, most people will get their weather from their phone. Fewer and fewer ppl use the TV for weather, so they will eventually be phazed out.

Remember the days when Weather Channel was a side scrolling channel that showed temperature, 10 day forecast, and Doppler radar 24 hours a day?

What happened in the last ten years....they've got documentaries, commentaries, lengthy chats with news anchors, everything but showing your local weather. They are the MTV of weather.

Phone.... phones.... phones.... everything is phones. I was talking to a 20 something young lady the other day and altho she seemd somewhat intelligent, every fact she mentioned in our conversation was prefaced with "my phone told me".
