Caught this newscast yesterday morning. The NBC4 anchor mistakenly reported that the sensors detect an average of 17,000 gunshots per day in DC. (the real number is 17).

It must be funny if some out-of-towner overheard the 17,000 number and thinks DC has thousands and thousands of bullets flying around every day.

17,000 would be a fucking war.

A bet there are far more shots than actually calls to police, ie warning shots and near misses between bad actors, test fires and just zany horsing around and spraying the sky etc.

I would have loved to hear the stats from the mid and late 80's when crack was rampant.

Kinda sorta...

As far as homicides, violent and gun-related crimes, it's around half of what it was at its height in the late-80s through the 90s.

But it's still higher than it was prior to passing the more restrictive gun laws in 75. In fact, the types of crimes above INCREASED by 3X to 5X after passage of the law. For the simple reason that there are much more significant factors which drive such things than gun laws.

Yep, even I got caught up in it.

That and other gang-related activity which also has dropped off a lot for a variety of reasons.

In any case, the ability to legally buy/own a gun or not was not what drove those rates either way.

the cops found a crank pipe under my car seat when I was 18 and I got hauled in pretty good. not a good way to get started in adulthood and I ended up on IV drugs for a few years.

The deserve credit. They approached the problem in a realistic and direct way. As opposed to, for example, Chicago, where they remained in denial and tried to blame it on everything else and let the root causes take over.

There's a weird teabagger conspiracy that these gunshot tracking systems are being used to record conversations of private citizens in public places and being used to track people's movements via a UN-controlled voice database system. Glenn Beck has talked about it, but it's really only a retarded teabagger theory, there's really no facts behind it, just speculation.

The only thing that I find in a search for glenn beck and Shotspotter is this, which doesn't even mention Beck other than in a link to another article and is a complete reprint (see below) with no added commentary.

I have a feeling this map is very inaccurate if they are triangulating gunshots in the middle of the Potomac river.

Even using stupid reporter math, 17,000 is laughable. ~90,000 seconds in a day, ~20,000 shots a day, that would be a shot every 4.5s. Oh well -- so much for simple math. I was told today I needed to buy 8 items to correctly use a buy 2 get 1 free sale.

Doesn't sound like it helps solve very many cases.
