The expression "April Fool's" (or perhaps "April Fools," Tentative Grammar Watch advises me, with characteristic uncertainty) has acquired a generic meaning such that while its primary connotation is associated with April 1, it can properly be used to refer to any practical joke of the April Fool's Day variety.

Although beyond the scope of my expertise, it might also be noted that the OP's joke was executed with perfect style and timing, surely eliciting a chuckle from all but the permanently stick-up-arse disabled.
