Boehner's office sent out an update that the Speaker received an email from DC Health Link confirming he had been enrolled.

There is now "federal plan." I wonder which company he signed up with. Probably Blue Cross. I'm sure he did a platinum plans.

He got a bronze plan. Another article said the Platinum plan would've been $300 more. His rates seem low, lower than mine in fact. Obviously, he gets special discount for smoking like a chimney and going out for 3 martini lunches.

There is no orange plan. Healthcare companies divide their plans into catastrophic, bronze, silver, gold and platinum. Each level is comparable across the board with another companies plan.

Hence a bronze plan from Athem is the same coverage as a Bronze plan from Blue Cross.

The ACA established this so consumers could easily see who was offering the lower a better rate. Before the ACA you had to read all the plans from different carriers and figure out what was and wasn't covered by in the different plans.

Per ehealth.com, I have choice of just three companies in Fairfax County. Before, there were more companies offering higher deductible plans.

You still need to read up on what treatments are covered and how much coinsurance is applicable for the surgeries. Once the out-of-pocket maximum is breached, they should be the same.

You also still to have to look up what medical facilities and doctors.

I am a long term Democrat. Boehner could of took the Congress exemptions but he didn't. He signed up for Healthcare like every other American.

I sure bitter republicans will bash him for this just they did Christie.

Boehner doing this may be the last straw in me shifting to the republican side.

Nope. The levels are not directly and exactly comparable across all same-level plans. They are roughly comparable at a minimum coverage level, that's all. e.g., Most Bronze plans will be at a minimum of a 60/40 actuarial coverage BUT there are some which are higher, some have higher/lower deductibles, co-pays vary, some are very restricted networks which cover nothing beyond emergency care out of network, etc., etc.

You definitely do need to look at all of the details of the plans.

And, when you see the details, Obamacare only gets worse.

HMO shitty plans.

The few PPOs offered have out-of-network deductibles so high that only a wealthy guy like Obama would benefit.

Obamacare is bullshit.

It has nothing to do with giving medical insurance to the poor or lowering medical costs for almost all Americans who already have insurance.

Only an idiot would think that was the intention.

But what the hey.....

I'm sure he will also have a second plan to cover deductibles. Of course if your a millionaire do really care if you have a $500 deductible or a $1500.

I went with the gold plan. I think it's worth the money. Platinum is too expense for what you get. I don't need all that coverage.

He gets a big break from working in the DC area. Insurance plans cost double in his home district. They're generally around $800/mo for a 64-year old. There are probably a large number of people on government plans in his home state. They drive up the cost for private payors because the lower reimbursement rates mandated by Medicare, Medicaid, Tricare, and so on.

I would think DC would have higher rates.

Rates appear to be shooting up in rural areas. I looked at SW Virginia and the number of insurers dropped from 4 to 1 (Optima Health) and rates went 140-200 to 500-700..

What do you mean by "the number of insurers dropped"? Do you mean from October 1 until now? Or are you referring to something before the ACA?

Below is a brief summary of the 10 Essential Health Benefits that all metal plans must offer:

Ambulatory patient services (such as doctor visits and other care you receive as a “walk-in” as opposed to services a person receives as an “inpatient” at a hospital or other care facility)
Emergency services - These include care received in an Emergency Room
Hospitalization - These include medically-necessary surgeries and other inpatient procedures
Maternity care and newborn care
Mental health services & substance use disorder services – These services include counseling as well as behavioral health treatment for alcohol abuse and drug abuse
Drug coverage – This applies to prescription medication and not over-the-counter drugs
Rehabilitative and habilitative services and devices - Rehabilitation covers services such as relearning to speak after an aneurysm while habilitative services involve learning a new skill such as managing diabetes through various behaviors
Laboratory tests and services (for example, X-Rays)
Preventive and wellness services as well as the management of chronic diseases
Pediatric medical services (including both oral care and vision care)

They're likely looking at providers offering ACA-compliant plans with a start date in 2014. Various companies are not participating in all areas and, if so, at a higher cost in more rural areas.

He/she is likely looking at two start dates for insurance and comparing rates. That site says 2013 plans can be carried over but that is subject to the insurer's choice.

It's a higher cost in these rural areas because half of these rednecks have never seen a doctor.

Rural areas have far fewer choices than other areas. The state of Georgia for example had Aetna and BCBS drop coverage their entirely last I saw.

What was supposed to increase competition actually dramatically reduced it.
