Six years after his Virginia Tech game, the Australian posted a justification on his website for the Sandy Hook simulation, claiming that the game is designed to highlight the difference between Australian gun culture and American - which he says has spiraled out of control.

'I grew up in Houston, Texas, where I remember guns and ammunition being available in unmanned sections of Wal-Mart and it being commonplace to hear gunshots in the distance as I tried to go to sleep, which is a stark contrast to Sydney, Australia, where I moved to in 2001,' Lambourn says in an audio message in the credits to the game.

'Australia had sweeping gun control put into place after the 1996 Port Arthur Massacre in which 35 people died, and the result of that sweeping regulation is that guns are no longer a noticeable part of Australian culture. Guns are practically non-existent here.

'Back in America … all these massacres don’t seem to have had any similar effect on regulation. Instead, gun control and enforcement have steadily loosened,' he said in his message.

'And here we are, nearly a year after the Sandy Hook shootings … and absolutely nothing positive has come out of it.'

My memory may be fuzzy but I seem to recall someone making a Columbine FPS game back in the 90's and catching holy hell over it.

There was a Columbine game...

The guy that made this Sandy Hook game also created a Virginia Tech game six years ago. He claims it is art.

The point is that people get more outraged over this than the actual shooting. Little thing called satire.

No. It isn't satire.

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2510991/Ryan-Jake-Lambourn-Sandy-Hook-video-game-Virginia-Tech-Rampage.html

In the interview, published on video-game website destructoid.com, a remorseless Lambourn, then aged 21, admitted that he meant the game to be offensive 'so me and my friends and people like me and my friends could have a laugh.'

Defending the appalling timing of the game so soon after the massacre, Lambourn said that he didn't care if the families were not ready to see it, saying that 'i don't see that as my need to wait for them to build up a tolerance to pain.'

Appearing to only want to get a reaction from his interviewer, Lambourn makes the galling claim that his video simulation of a mass murder is in fact art - claiming that attacking people online, or trolling, 'is an art in itself.'

Asking Lambourn on Twitter why he had created the game, Donna Soto was gifted withering answers, including one sarcastic reply in which he told her he would 'crib note' the point, which was 'gun control'.

He is genuinely anti-gun, but he only added that note to give his recent game legitimacy. He just does this to offend people. That isn't satire or irony or art.

I'm glad you seem to support this game's creation, though....because it's satire in your eyes.

http://www.examiner.com/article/increased-gun-control-lead-to-increased-gun-violence-australia

Australia only had like what? 1 mass shooting every 10 years or so before they banned most firearms?

Just because Australia hasn't had another mass shooting since they banned most firearms doesn't prove that a similar gun ban in the USA would be effective at ending mass shootings.

The USA has way more guns and people than Australia does. Good luck trying to confiscate 300 to 500 million privately owned firearms...

Australia is also an island with a relatively sane immigration system. Smuggling guns into Australia is a lot harder than smuggling guns into the USA. We border Mexico, which serves as a gateway to the brown "hispanic" 3rd world of Central and South America; which has the highest gun murder rates on the planet (despite having very strict Australian-style gun regulations by the way).

Not only that, but conservative Americans practically worship gun rights. In Australia and the rest of the Western world, not even so-called "conservatives" support gun rights. Trying to confiscate guns in the USA could literally result in a civil war (not an exaggeration).

Also, mass shootings have still occurred in other Western countries and U.S. cities that have similar gun regulations as Australia.

People are just going to have to come to grips with the seemingly counterintuitive realization that since the USA has SO many guns, the best way to deal with mass shootings is actually MORE guns and LOOSER gun laws.

I'm a concealed carry permit holder. If a mass shooter decides to strike in an area that I'm in, I can whip out my Glock 26 and blow him or her away. But since I always follow the law, I don't carry in areas where guns are banned. In areas like that, everyone is a sitting duck.

So is the game any good or what?

I've played the GTA games and the Godfather series; being a psycopathic gangster is fun but I'm looking for a new thing.

That guy makes no sense. Anti gun nuts are total hypocrites and whackos and they have the gall to call gun owners crazy, when gun owners are more sane and consistently stick to their values.

The game though, is just a fucking game. Who cares? Dont like it? Dont play it. This would be an awesome game if it was old school Wolfenstein Doom style.

I am a Mancubus. Its a game. You've played GTA games, you ran over people indiscrimately, robbed them, old ladies inckuded, shot them via drive by and more. Same shit here. First Amendment wasn't created to protect popular forms of speech.

I'll take your word for it then. But that doesn't make the point any less true; this kind of thing tends to get more of a reaction than an actual real life mass shooting in a school. No indeed, America couldn't keep AR-15's on the shelves the moments after it happened. Which repulses you more--this stupid game which no one would have even heard of if Matt Drudge and his like hadn't brought it to your attention--or the sickening fact I just mentioned? I think this guy made a valid point without meaning to.

I think you are searching for a deeper meaning that just isn't there, and you have a need to take opposite viewpoints.

No, I do find it unsettling to think that this throwaway non-story is apparently news, when Americans in general don't seem to look at themselves and think how sick and disturbing it is that the murder weapon in the shooting was selling out in gun shops across the country directly after. I do see a correlation. Some things are better "outrage" material, like this game. It's despicable, of course. But weigh the reactions we're now having to this and to the shooting. No one wants to sit and examine what's really going on...it's like we can only handle "surface" outrage..."false" outrage. This stupid game is obviously very polarizing, to say the least. So was the shooting, thanks to the NRA and anti-gun lobbies alike...but it's how many months later, and haven't we mostly "moved on" from it? Does anyone even remember The Joker, for example? It's like we have an expiration date for tragedy. I'm not a contrarian. Just trying to point out that once we're done with the late-night vigils and and all that mourning stuff's behind us, we kinda get past these things pretty quick, and AR-15's are still as legal now as they were before...and now, best-sellers. What makes you more angry? An honest question.

Not intending on switching subjects here but....

Did anyone blame the NRA when Kennedy was shot?

Did the media rush out and interview recent gun show patrons about the purchase of their Mannlicher-Carcano/Mauser?

Actually, the Kennedy shootings and King assassination led the way for the GCA68 law. Oswald bought his rifle through mail order. You can't do that anymore except for antiques and muzzleloaders.

And then crime only got worse all through the 70s, demonstrating the stupidity of trying to ban the things criminals might use instead of trying to find out why there are so many criminals in the first place.
