Contemporary version of WinAMP

"This may come as a shock to the system, but effective December 20, 2013, Winamp will become a ghost of the Internet's past. AOL, which bought Winamp in 1999 for $80 million, has decided to shut down the popular media player service just five days before Christmas, officially ending a better than 15-year run as one of the most well regarded media players among power users.

Winamp and all associated web services will cease to exist past December 20th. Additionally, AOL will no longer host downloads, though with the wealth of third-party download sites in cyberspace, we're sure it won't be all that difficult to find. If you want to play it on the safe side, however, you'll want to download the latest -- and last -- version before that date, AOL stated on Winamp's website."

Is this some great loss? iTunes can do it better.

Oh yeah, dude. The visualizer alone sets it apart. It's a shitload more intuitive than iTunes or WMP. It looks cooler. You can get different skins and such for it. It has an EQ. On and on and on.

This makes me sad.

Its softwarw dude, it doesn't die, the older version was better than the newer version anyway. Just find an old install file and you can still use it. Feel better now?

At the time I thought WinAmp was the coolest thing ever on the internetz, hard to believe it's even still around. iTunes was sort of a pain running on winxp, but it's a superior product running on OSX. And fwiw it does have EQ settings.

I remember when the 5.x first came out.

Everyone could host their own videos and have it show up in winamp and it was fun watching all these hosted videos around the world and yes some was porn and many were from Japan ande iceland.

I remember watching a tv channel on winamp and it was just 24/7 commercials.

IT was famous because they were funny commercials never seen in USA before.

But then the guys at winamp took away the control from the people. Winamp menu subsystem was really on the server and not on the client end.

Less and less videos were showing up and more and more corporate supported videos and winamp right there lost its mojo.

Winamp 5.x was better than YOUTUBE before the people got screwed over.

Sounds like the precursor to youtube. If the matched their servers with website accessibility it could have been worth tens of billions today.

Yeah, and now youtube is starting to suck, too. Google is doing their best to fuck it up and remove all user privacy.

Things change. I remember when Netscape was the big time browser.

Speaking of the old days, funny hearing that AOL even still exists. Remember Prodigy? 14.4k modems? LOL

One thing i use to hate about AOL was getting those CD ROMS in the mail that offered you 500hrs of free Internet. That was when i still had a Dial up modem, and was using Excite for all my email and Lycos. Those were the good day's.

Now i can't even keep up with all the new services that are around and offer anything you can think of. I just read somewhere that a start up company called 'Snapchat' which i never heard of rejected billion dollar offer from FB.

I had at&t dial up but I remember using free dial up on the fly when I was somewhere that didn't have internet.

I forgot there was like this free internet with ads dial up you could use. Net Zero I think they called it. Yeah that was it.

Then of course this thread would be nothing if someone didn't mention ICQ and mIRC.

It seems Microsoft may buy Nullsoft and WinAMP. This actually makes some sense. They haven't really updated Windows Media Player since 12 (in Windows 7) and they have phased out their Zune Client. WinAMP could fill the role of a full-featured desktop media client.

Well, Microsoft fought a war with Winamp for years, now they can buy all its secrets for pennies on the dollar. Are there patents involved?
