It's not common these days. It has to stem from upbringing. Common courtesy. I'm not saying that I always possessed it. I was taught and picked it up at a very young age, along with manners. It became natural and remains natural. Some people just do not grasp the concept. Courtesy from any aspect of life. Whether it's a courtesy flush, or letting your family know you are okay. Whether it's wiping up a spill so a child or elderly person doesn't slip and fall. To simply telling your fucking bad ass Mexican elephant babies to stop stomping on the floor at 11pm when you live above another family (my fucking ragedy ass neighbors).

The issue is NOVA used to be majority white and the black slaves we owned. That's it. No diversity. Hispanics, Arabs and Chinamen were oddities you'd see once a year at the circus...However, now that celebrate diversity has become the rallying cry of NOVA we, as a region, have lost our sense of self and place and have just become a leftist, tossed salad bowl morass which refuses to assimilate and melting pot itself to those customs, practices, laws and yes...courtesies which were in place since the 1700's. I've lived here my entire life (40 years) and I've also travelled throughout the 7 continents...

I don't know what I find more amazing...the fact that as a region, NOVA socially accepts any and all behavior out of fear of offending those whom the left have designated as different whom the rest of us used to call non-whites OR...the fact that EVERY other country I've visited, if you act like an American, conduct yourself as an American and refuse to assimilate, you are shit on at every opportunity...

That's our whole country. Not just NOVA. I've lived here 36 years (born in GA..live there 1 year). This is my home. I have memories of when you could leave the door open....of when I could walk to school alone on the paths in Reston at the age of 9. Where kids offered to carry groceries and when your neighbor looked out for all the kids when they were outside. This new place...it sucks. *holding back biblical comment*

40 years ago. You must have been running around with your eyes WIDE SHUT. Grab a yearbook for most Fairfax high schools back then and you will probably be shocked to find Asians, Hispanics and people from the Middle East had already started showing up.

True, but in the 1970s we started getting the first major wave of immigration from Asia, mostly people fleeing as the governments in SE Asia fell under the Communists. By the late 1970s I remember friends in Fairfax and not just Arlington complaining because their neighborhoods were on the verge of "going gook".

Really? Is that really how you remember it? The 1970s was when I first started seeing black-white couples, and I was seeing it in school long before I saw it "on the streets". Most of the Asian chicks I knew were dating White guys. Of course many of them were smoking so that even the racist rednecks I went to school with were salivating over them. Blacks had pretty much embraced the whole "Black Power" movement so forget that respect for whitey bit, although as indivduals there were mostly fine.

Which brings me to a curious justaposition. When I was in high school here 40 years ago Fairfax County you didn't typically have the lower class immigrant population we see today. The County did still have a strong contingent of lower (economic) class whites. My HSs SATs looked fairly good in those days until you considered that at least a third of the class didn't even take the test.
