Able to carry 800 Marines and their gear anyplace they need to go — the San Antonio Class Amphibious Transport Dock is vital for projecting U.S. forces abroad: but they don't come cheap.

The newest vessel will cost American taxpayers about $1.5 billion and is designed to be the the most survivable amphibious assault ship ever designed.
While the Defense Department's director of evaluations doesn't agree, and thinks the ship's critical systems aren't reliable, and the ship will crumble against an attack — it didn't stop the Pentagon from purchasing one more — last week.

Given the ship's weighty cost and its debatable abilities we thought we'd take a look at what the Pentagon's getting for the taxpayers' dollars.

How did we ever win World War II without extravagant over-engineered military equipment?

This stuff isn't designed to win wars, it's designed to make the investors at Carlyle Group wealthy.

What would the modern version of an Exocet ship to ship missile ddo to that floating coffin? Or a submarine skipper who knew his business? Empire--welfare for the rich shipyard owners and their paid for politicians. War for the poor. And a permanent home in a garden of stone for the people risking their lives to go there for elitist lies. May I ask an irreverent question? How many of those does Switzerland have or need? When one of those goes to the bottom it won't be full of Princeton kids. Hey y'all ... war is good business. Invest your father, brother or son.

No, but it will have some Naval Academy graduates, which are expensive investments in and of themselves.

Not even that, how about an old Silk Worm missile, bought by many third-world nations. Obsolete compared to the newer stuff, but still an effective weapon.

I wonder how the Navy seamen feel in their ridiculous vivid blue digital patterns, standing next to the Marines?

I can do you even better than that. You guys are so 20th Century in your thinking!

The super-cheap way to take out a $1.5 billion ship is to have a couple guys float up to it while in port in a powerboat with 400-700 lbs of explosives in a shaped charge.

It must have a food court.

In the same vein, the AF just killed a $1 billion logistics project.

Considering these things take a long time to go from concept to actual working system, you'll have to ask Dick Cheney and Donald Rumsfeld.

I am sure all of their friends were invited to that party. You can bet Halliburton and KBR got a piece of the pie.
