Arab Spring-FAIL, Egyptian Clerics Want to Destroy "Pagan" Pyramids
Posted by: WingNut ()

Islamist extremists are already raging in Africa and Asia and destroying relics to "purify" their faith.

Fucking morons.

According to several reports in the Arabic media, prominent Muslim clerics have begun to call for the demolition of Egypt’s Great Pyramids—or, in the words of Saudi Sheikh Ali bin Said al-Rabi‘i, those “symbols of paganism,” which Egypt’s Salafi party has long planned to cover with wax. Most recently, Bahrain’s “Sheikh of Sunni Sheikhs” and President of National Unity, Abd al-Latif al-Mahmoud, called on Egypt’s new president, Muhammad Morsi, to “destroy the Pyramids and accomplish what the Sahabi Amr bin al-As could not.”

This is a reference to the Muslim Prophet Muhammad’s companion, Amr bin al-As and his Arabian tribesmen, who invaded and conquered Egypt circa 641. Under al-As and subsequent Muslim rule, many Egyptian antiquities were destroyed as relics of infidelity. While most Western academics argue otherwise, according to early Muslim writers, the great Library of Alexandria itself—deemed a repository of pagan knowledge contradicting the Koran—was destroyed under bin al-As’s reign and in compliance with Caliph Omar’s command.

So, just like the Taliban did to all those ancient Buddhist statues....

I feel bad for the Coptic Christians living in Egypt. Dangerous times ahead.

This is one of many reason why the US has supported dictators like Mubarek, because the alternative was either Communism or a rabid theocracy.

We fucked up letting Iran flip from secular dictatorship to Muslim dictatorship.

Pretty unfortunate if Egypt makes the same move. Or Libya, Syria, Tunisia.

The thought of destroying something so old is really disgusting.

It's sorta funny how these things have existed in Islamic lands basically forever, until RIGHT NOW.

Great example of why religion has no place in politics.

And the Spanish church officials systematically destroyed the mathematical texts of the Mayans and other natives in the Americas.

The Egyptian religio-tards want to do what the Taliban assholes did in Afghanistan, now? I guess they don't realize that the pyramids are pretty much the only reason not to bomb the fuck out of that litterbox they live in.

Religion is stupid, LOL.

That said, they did not trade secular dictatorship for Muslim dictatorship; the army still rules because the revolutionaries were dumb enough to believe the army was on their side.

This is not going to happen.

Egypt is not Afghanistan. When the Taliban destroyed the Buddhas of Bamiyan most of the people in the world didn't know they existed despite having been standing at the edge of civilization for almost 1400 years. They Great Pyramids and the other ancient antiquities in Egypt are well known and are a major source of much-needed foreign currency.

The destruction of the Buddhas was accomplished by a whole lot of explosives placed in the side of the cliff that the statues were originally hacked out of. Even a bunch of uneducated sheep herders could figure out how to do this.

The Pyramids are HUGE structures. Building them took thousands of workers at least 20 years (or aliens if you are from the tinfoil hat crowd) to build. Destroying them would require a lot more work. There are thousands of sites spread all over Egypt and it would take a concerted effort and a whole lot of money to accomplish the destruction of sites like the Valley of the Kings or the Temple of Luxor.

> While most Western academics argue otherwise, according to early Muslim writers,

No one knows for sure when the library was destroyed, but the most likely destruction occurred much earlier. The Great Library of Alexandria was first burned by Julius Caesar by accident in 30 B.C. during the Roman Conquest of Egypt.

The general consensus it was Theophilus, the Bishop of Alexandria, who ordered the complete destruction of the library during the 4th Century -- 250 years before the Arab Conquest. If you look into the progeny of the story that the Arabs destroyed the library, you will find that it is the Coptic Christians who maintain this version of events (conveniently) and the stories were first recorded at least 500 years after the Arab Conquest.

For anyone who has studied history, the destruction of "pagan" knowledge and artifacts has largely been carried out by the Christian religion. The reason for the "Dark Ages" in Europe was the stranglehold that the church had on all higher learning. Europe devolved to primitive agriculture and only basic architecture while the remnants of the Roman Empire in the East (Byzantium) continued to maintain a high level of culture until it finally fell in 1453.

It was the Islamic Caliphates, particularly the Abbasids and the Fatimids that preserved the ancient knowledge of the Greeks and Romans -- and improved on it with arabic numerals and mathematics (algebra is an Arabic word). The European Renaissance came about with the West's "rediscovery" of ancient knowledge and culture from their contact with Islamic culture.

---

Islam has had a grip on Egypt for almost 1400 years. They have had plenty of time to destroy what is there. They have done a good job of preserving the monuments up until now, and will probably continue to do so.

We have our wacky preachers who burn the Koran here and they have their wacky imams who speak of destroying non-muslim texts. Thankfully there are smarter people who protect and preserve the past.

Plenty of muslims have attempted to destroy the pyramids and the sphinx. HOw do you think the sphinx lost its nose?

No one knows how it lost its nose. One of the often-quoted stories was that the nose was shot off by one of Napoleon's soldiers when the French captured Egypt in 1798-1801.

Don't worry, Egypt will not let their religious wackos destroy their artifacts. Tourism is their biggest industry.

Bullshit. The sphinx was sketched in the early 1700s and it didn't have its nose then. The nose was removed in the 14th Century in an act of islamic inconoclasm.

Don't worry, I could give a shit if people knock down a bunch of ancient antiquities.

As Ito said, the nose was lost to people using it as target practice. When it was being shot at, the Sphinx was buried almost completely by sand. No one knew what it was until recent history.

That is a myth. You AND Ito are wrong. Go back to high school history. You need a refresher, dummy.

The nose was chiseled off by Suphi Muslim leaders. Now admit you are wrong and go back to enjoying your hot pocket in the basement.

I mentioned the Napoleon story as just one of the rumors. The Sufi story is also not from a contemporary source and is not considered authoritative. No doubt it is probably true, but Muslims didn't have a monopoly on defacing old statues -- the Catholic and Orthodox Church destroyed much more of ancient antiquity in the name of iconoclasty. The term iconoclast comes from the Byzantine Empire where all graven images were destroyed because of the teachings of the Commandments. These were Christians who were doing this.

I have been to Egypt and if you were to go there would not believe the extreme care that is taken of the artifacts and ancient sites. Of all the places in the world where ancient ruins can be found, Egypt is perhaps some of the oldest and the best preserved. There are so many ancient sites in Egypt it would take you years to go and see every one of them.

The average Egyptian is very proud of their heritage. If you think Americans venerate Mt. Vernon or Independence Mall, you better believe the Egyptians venerate the Great Pyramids, the Sphinx and the Valley of the Kings in the same way.

Seriously, there are and always will be fringe elements in every society that take the fairy tales of religion as strict doctrine. There will always be madmen who try to destroy these treasures, but thankfully society does its best to protect them.

Crusades were a long time ago, not that some really heinous shit didn't go in the Inquisition etc, but we're talking about modern times and these fuckwads are acting like destructive superstitious lunatics...

Most of the 7 Wonders of the Ancient World didn't make it this far. It's been a good run for the pyramids. Maybe it's time for a shopping mall to go there.
