I doubt this. More likely they made it very clear to him that they were going to put him into a Federal maximum security prison for-fucking-ever where he would have to spend the rest of his life on lockdown in Punk City.

He's a thief (he used stolen credit card numbers to pay his bills) and a snitch, neither of which looks very good on one's résumé. Cyber security is one of the fastest growing sectors of the government, both for offense and defense. This guy's main job in the group was to find security flaws for the rest of the crew. He was evidently very good at what he did. Do you really think the government's going to let an asset like that just sit in prison when they could put it to use, say, identifying flaws in their networks before others do?

He probably won't do much, if any jail time. Instead he'll be an indentured servant to the FBI (i.e. the guy from Catch Me If You Can). Why wouldn't the FBI exploit a talented hacker who is well versed in the Anonymous culture and tactics?

His real identity doesn't matter. Everything he did online he did under the alias 'Sabu'. Nobody he was working with actually knew who he was (until he screwed up of course). He would simply have to create a new identity online and nobody would know it's him.

Granted, I'm not an expert on the underground hacking scene, but I imagine that efforts are made to verify the identity of one's associates before committing federal crimes. Just in case one of the guys you're working with turned snitch and just created a new screen name.
Hell, on a much smaller level, you can see the paranoia over peoples' actual identities on this site.

I'm certainly no hacker but I've read a good deal about Anonymous and the Lulzsec hackings. The reason these hackers felt confident enough working together to commit federal crimes is that they used tools to remain anonymous. They would use VPNs, proxy sites, stolen routers and other means to mask their IP addresses. They trusted no one and generally operated under the assumption that any one of their compatriots could possibly be law enforcement. Clearly some were better than others at covering their tracks... and some were just stupid kids who didn't really know what they were doing.

Judging from the arrests, it looks like they knew each other IRL. From what I've heard and read, Lulzsec was more of the script kiddie types than Anonymous.

Yeah, you're right. I'm sure he had figured out the identities of some of the people he was working with. Either they were stupid and told him, didn't know what they were doing technically or he socially engineered it out of them.
