ELYRIA, Ohio— An Elyria mother has been charged with two counts of child endangering for allegedly leaving her two young children home alone while she went to a bar, Fox 8 News reports.
At approximately 12:30 a.m. on Sept. 21, the Elyria Police Department received a child endangering complaint after Monica Ashby, 27, told members of the North Ridgeville Police Department at Crissy's Place Bar that she had left her kids at home. According to the police report, Ashby was highly intoxicated at the time.
EPD officers went to Ashby's apartment complex in Elyria, where they were met by a security officer who said that he saw her leave approximately three hours earlier.
When the officers entered the apartment, they found the children -- ages 1 and 2 -- sleeping on a mattress in the living room area. The kids were positively identified as the children of Monica Ashby by her cousin, who then took custody of them. The cousin told officers that Ashby already had a case pending with Lorain County Children Services.
As Ashby was being arrested at the bar, she refused to get into the cruiser. She kicked the arresting officer with both of her feet just below his groin. Eventually, she was subdued and taken to the Elyria Police Department, where she was charged. She was subsequently transported to the Lorain County Sheriff's Office, where she was held.
