Very GEICO Terrible

Am i the only one who finds it weird that they put a basketball hoop right in front of the garage?

All I can ever see in this commercial is how awkward the "father's" massive hand looks. It's like he doesnt know what to do with his hands.

The guy's shadow actually falls 90 degrees off from where the trees in the background are falling and another 90 degrees off from his kid’s shadow.

I hate how they have this huge looking house in the background that this family apparently lives in... yet they can't save for their son to go to college? Geico Say: "Keep on living on credit and over spending, we'll help you pick up the slack!"

Lol look at the bottom right.

The guys hand placement is weird.

Is this a shot against black people?

"Is this a shot against black people?"

Not really.

The primary "joke" is that a known way to improve chances for getting a scholarship to a top college is for your kid to excel in some sport. The ad focuses on basketball because it lends itself to a simple sight gag that could be played out in a 30-second spot. The absurdity of the gag is meant to point out the unlikelihood of getting your kid into college via the sports-scholarship route.

That said, the ad does seem to aim a subtle dog whistle at white people: do you REALLY think your little pale-faced nerd has a shot at an athletic scholarship? Uh, no. Therefore you better started saving money now, and you can do that by switching to Geico.

Thus, not so much a shot against black people, as a reiteration of the white-men-can't-jump meme.

Geico is aiming at young families with children, probably families who are not as wealthy as the family pictured in the ad (as implied by the huge house), but who would like to be, and who are worried about how they are going to pay for college.

I think the awkward hands are meant to signal a real-people-not-actors vibe, but in a stylized way that fits with the overall lighthearted feel. Both actors give off a stylized, fake-awkward vibe ("Scholarship!").
