Always found the derivation of these things fascinating like:

The Rule of thumb: a stick had to be thinner than your thumb before you could beat your wife/kid/passer bye with it.

The proof is in the pudding: some serial killer was disposing of the local children and making pudding with them.

I was under the impression that the rule of thumb was a carpentry rule. It was the thickness of a piece of wood to be able to support the weight of a person. but again it was a rough estimate.
