Who won the FY2011 budget showdown?
Posted by: scorecard ()

Who will win the FY2012?

I think Boehner played it pretty well and looked to get more in the end, especially considering he waqs coming into the game with the weakest negotiating position because he was outnumbered by the President and the Senate.

No one ever wins in these situations and the only real losers are average Americans.

Nobody really won, but it did make the Republicans look like fools since they couldn't get the budget passed until midnight.

It's going to be interesting to see how all the redneck farmers are going to react to having their subsidies cut. Last time that happened they filled the mall with tractors and blocked DC traffic.

Sad thing is that it turned into such a debacle over numbers that don't even equal 1% of the entire budget. You would have thought it was as much as 50% of the entire budget to hear both parties cry.

They all suck IMO.

Are you talking about the three budgets they passed before the Democrat controlled Senate even decided to act? Way to have a firm grasp of the situation.

Obviously Boenhner won this round. He was able to get a bunch of stuff out of the left, enough to appease the freshmen and tea party representatives. I think the republicans learned much from their mistakes of the mid-90s.

I still detest both sides for the circus last week.

I don't think anyone "won" because as someone said looking at the actual budget this was arguing over nothing. Regarding Boehner though, last I heard the Tea Party planned to try to primary him out. He did NOT appease them at all.

Congress looked like a bunch of fools and voters are going to equate that with Republican control. The Boner looked like an idiot who had no control.

Republicans control Congress?

Every unbiased anaylsis out there says Boehner came out a winner. He mopped the floor with Harry Reid.

In other words, blame the Republicans because they are too controlling, leveled against their leader who has no control. Did I get that right?

Yeah, someone just doesn't get it. Boehner controlled the conversation and the outcome. Reid was along for the ride. I will admit to Boehner looking very weak early in the process. He either recovered nicely or is more calculating than I give him credit for.

That is about the dumbest post I've read today.

Basically, the voters on the left blame the right ~34%, The voters on the right blame the left ~34%. The remaining third are sick of all politicos.

While Boehner won, I'm sick of them all. It was pretty funny listening to the Prez say he hopes this is an example of future compromises. Wait, Wut?

It made Congress look bad, and since the GOP is the more prominent face in Congress these days, well....

As a progressive that statement was hard to hear, but it is the new reality I guess. It is no surprise Obama had to move hard center.

Boehner may have won with moderates and the media, but he lost with the Tea Party nuts because it wasn't $500 billion or whatever fucking unrealistic number they wanted.

Which will be inconsequencial in the long run. At the end of the day, the Tea Party has nowhere else to turn -- just like all the frigging progressives pissed at the Democrats and Obama, where will they go?

Eliminating sitting Speakers is oh so easy to do in a Primary election. Ask Cindy Sheehan how well that worked out for her. Boehner could win a Primary election in his district with whatever amount of cash he is currently carrying in his wallet. Thanks for the laugh though.

Well, in 2000 the Progressives went to Ralph Nader. And in '92 and '96 the deficit hawks (aka proto-Tea Baggers) went with Perot.

Even if the GOP keeps Bachmann, Paul, etc, in line, there's a chance the Tea Baggers will sit on their hands in 2012 if they don't like what they see in the budget process, which they probably won't.

Just as Karl Rove warned, Obama did.

Nothing like being handed the opportunity on a platter to look presidential with little chance of the media from responding.

Politics of hate - they didn't work last time and, boy!, are they sure not gonna work this time!

It's sad Boehner didn't have better control of Congress. I thought he would be a better leader. Crazy that the government was almost shutdown twice. That should NEVER even come close.

I just checked my calendar. It is 2011 and next year is 2012.

Probably not. They sat on their hands in '08 with McCain on the ticket. They are not pleased with what resulted - look at 2010 if you need evidence of that. Besides, a big prt of what the Tea Party is consists of local grass roots organizational operations. There are too many loosely defined National Organizations tryinf to claim the tea Party podium. They are much more of a bottom up organization than a top down organization like Perot and Nader. They actually care about local elections.

Maybe they'll get him replaced, maybe not. The point though is they are not "appeased."

Newt lost in a Primary election? Really? Seriously? You sure?

It sounds like the Tea Party is pretty pissed off about not cutting enough and want replacement in Congress for 2012. That spells trouble Republicans.

Yes, and it supposedly spelled trouble in 2010 as well. All the predictions of a divided GOP lead to Pelosi keeping her gavel, right?

I realize the party whose only original idea since 2005 is "we are not George W. Bush" might have trouble figuring out paths to victory, but simply sitting on the sideline predicting a divided GOP is not a recipe for victory. Sure, you got a few wins with Angle and O'Donnell, but beyond that your side has been decimated politically and in the policy arena.

WTL needs to check his facts: Newt did not lose his primary. He won handily in the 1998 general election, but resigned as Speaker and declined to take his seat in the 106th Congress.

Everyone said they were going to lose the House. Of course the Democratic party people didn't say that, they always say they're going to win. On election day do you expect the candidate running behind in the polls to get up there and concede that morning before anything happens? Remember 2006? Do you remember a lot of Republicans moping around the month or so before the election with their heads down in shame? No, of course not, they were still out campaigning and hoping the defeat they all knew was coming wasn't too bad and trying to keep their supporters spirits up and keep them mobilized.

The only thing in question was whether the Dems would hold the Senate, which they did.

Thanks, but I am not talking about a month before the inevitable. People were calling for a split that would hurt the GOP right up to 60 days before the foregone conclusion. It didn't materialize. Here they are again talking about and hoping for a split. Hope all you want, but if that is the only strategy expect more losses.

I don't think that split applies so much to House and Senate races, but it does apply to presidential races. But, if that is the only strategy the Dems have, then yes, that is not enough.

The very title of this thread sickens me.

Anyone who gets behind and supports what either party is doing or how they operate obviously doesn't give a fuck about this land.

It would be nice if our country not the government.
