Probably asked to go there and open a channel or two to Raul Castro - in case ya hadn't noticed, things are finally cooling off between our two countries.

Same as usual - undermining US foreign policy. I hope Obama is watching. We wouldn't want him to be just like Carter in office only. He has to have an example of an ex-President to emulate after office as well.

He's in Cuba for an important meeting with Hyman Roth. This is the business he has chosen.

I'm pretty sure that bitchnag wife of his has something to do with it. I think she is always pushing him into doing crap because she thinks his x-presidential stature doesn't live up to her standards. Clinton's popular, Reagan's popular, hell even both Bush's poll #'s are up. Carter's presidency is still seen as a failure even with all his Hab. for Human. work and hostage rescue trips. Carters prestige is negligible and this drives Rosalynn crazy. She won't stop until the poor man is in a hole with a rock on it.

Can you guys speak from knowledge. He is in Cuba on an unofficial visit with a couple of goals. One is to try and get the release of an American "spy" held in a Cuban jail. Second is to open some sort of dialog with Raul Castro. If you know anything about Cuba, one thing the US fears and fears ALOT, is the "peaceful transition of power" when a Castro dies. This could have serious consequences for US when it happens - the transition of power, not really the peaceful part.

Although the State Department is well aware this trip - he always alerts them well in advance of ANY foreign travel - despite what Ms. Rice said a few years back - The trip is under the auspices of the Carter Center and is not an official U.S. mission.

Carter authorized the CIA to secretly destabilize Afghanistan, so that the Soviet Union would invade. He also helped Pakistan start their nuclear program in 1972.

I hope not Cuba needs us more then we need Cuba. We stand to benefit very little from Cuba. Oh sure, maybe the fat cat politicians and organized crime folks will do OK. But for the run-of-the -mill average Joe, it won't help and possibly could harm. Just another second rate Mexico.

In 1972 Carter was Gov Of Georgia, and OUR GEORGIA, not theirs. So helping Pakistanis start a nuclear program at that time would be a stretch.

As fas as authorizing the CIA to destabilize Afghanistan "so that the Soviet Union would invade".... Are you saying any so called effort he made to destabilize Afghanistan was with his full intention and goal to have the Soviets invade later?

Or are you saying that Carter did something in Afghanistan beforehand and the Soviets invaded later, "so post hoc ergo propter hoc"?

Please explain. Either way - it is a crock of made up shit and straw grasping I am sure.

And Carter was a honorably discharged Lieutenant in the Navy who worked on a nuclear submarine. Why do you make up lies about our veterans? Do you not respect our troops?

I'd like to go and I pity the Cuban people who are enslaved, but even if Obama opens it up for tourism, you really should consider spending your vacation money in the US where it will help your fellow Americans.

One of our biggest exports to Cuba now is farm produce. With normalized relations, our farm produce exports to Cuba would grow. Why do you hate the American farmer and do not want to see him export the fruits of his labors to Cuba and make a buck so he can buy his wife a go-to-church dress?

CARTER ALSO AUTHORIZED THE CIA TO HELP UNDERMINE AND OVERTHROW AFGANISTAN'S CURRENT SOVIET FRIENDLY LEADER, SO AS TO DRAW THE RUSSIANS INTO INVADING.

As is your Marriott claim without any proof. Also, your anti-Mormanism illogical argument falls flat too. Just because you are registered does not mean you lose anonymous status. It also does not preclude you from making idiotic statements.

You offer no proof or support for your illogical statements. In fact, they are riddled with obvious logical fallacies.

I am a Democrat that opposes Mitt Romney. I must be anti-Morman, right? My neighbor is a Republican who opposes Obama, he must be anti-black, right? People on this thread find you to be an annoying twit (registered and unregistered), they must be anti-homosexual, right? According to your logic, all of the preceding is true.

Thats the benefit that the oppressors gain when a repressive government exist on a island, the majority of the people think that's the way of the world, their existense is no better or worst than anyone else in the world. They are (poor bastards) being fed one big lie. American tourism dollars would not even reach the needy, Cuba has an inborn corrupt gene in the elite, always was, always will be.

Um Listed on the Board of Directors of the The American Chamber of Commerce of Cuba in the United States, Inc. is Andy Wimsatt, Marriott International.

I am pointing out that others grasp at straws here... Why can't I.

Again, you do it, why can't I?

Say what Sybil? What "people" are you referring to? The word "people" is plural. Did you take a poll?

Fairfaxunderground rules: Lilliputions, not ok. Midgettville ok. I got it now.

1978: CIA Begins Covert Action in Afghanistan
Edit event

The CIA begins covert action against the Communist government in Afghanistan, which is closely tied to the Soviet Union. Some time this year, the CIA begins training militants in Pakistan and beaming radio propaganda into Afghanistan. By April 1979, US officials are meeting with opponents of the Afghan government to determine their needs. [Blum, 1995, pp. 344] Robert Gates, who will become CIA Director in the early 1990s, will later recall that in a meeting on March 30, 1979, Under Secretary of Defense Walter Slocumbe wonders aloud whether there is “value in keeping the Afghan insurgency going, ‘sucking the Soviets into a Vietnamese quagmire.’” [Gates, 1996, pp. 145] In March 1979, there is a major revolt in Herat province, and in June and August there are large scale army mutinies. [Cooley, 2002, pp. 5] President Carter will formally approve covert aid to opponents of the government in July (see July 3, 1979), which will result in a Russian invasion in December (see December 8, 1979).

July 3, 1979: President Carter Approves Covert Aid to Anti-Soviet Forces in Afghanistan
Edit event

President Carter authorizes covert aid for opponents of the Communist government in Afghanistan. Zbigniew Brzezinski, Carter’s National Security Adviser, will state in 1998, “According to the official version of history, CIA aid to the mujaheddin began… after the Soviet army invaded Afghanistan… But the reality, secretly guarded until now, is completely otherwise: Indeed, it was July 3, 1979 that President Carter signed the first directive for secret aid to the opponents of the pro-Soviet regime in Kabul. And that very day, I wrote a note to the president in which I explained to him that in my opinion this aid was going to induce a Soviet military intervention.… We didn’t push the Russians to intervene, but we knowingly increased the probability that they would.” [Le Nouvel Observateur (Paris), 1/15/1998] After Brzezinski’s confession, other US officials who denied US involvement prior to the Soviet invasion will change their story as well. For instance, Charles Cogan, who is head of the CIA covert aid program to Afghanistan at this time, will call Carter’s approval on this day a “very modest beginning to US involvement.” [Cooley, 2002, pp. 10] In fact, even this is not correct because the CIA had been aiding the rebels since at least the year before (see 1978 and 1973-1979). The Soviets invade Afghanistan by the end of 1979 (see December 8, 1979)

Yeah, didn't you hear? You lost. You are made fun of as much as Meade, yet are too stupid to even realize it.

In an autobiography entitled Why Not The Best? published during his successful run for the White House, Democrat Jimmy Carter says that “the unnecessary proliferation of atomic weapons” is the greatest danger facing the world. During the presidential campaign, Carter will condemn the failure of the incumbent, Republican Gerald Ford, to denounce a recent nuclear bomb test by India, and his slow response to a deal by the French to sell Pakistan a reprocessing plant that could be used as a part of a nuclear weapons program. However, following the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan in late 1979, the Carter administration will turn a blind eye to Pakistan’s nuclear program (see December 26, 1979). [Armstrong and Trento, 2007, pp. 62]
