ABout 3-4 years for me. I do get away sometimes briefly for the weekends, but I wouldn't count that as vacation, as I was on-call and still had to work.

I last took a week off in June to vacation with my kids. Was hoping to get in a beach vacation before school but that didn't happen. Totally sucks. Now, I'm not looking at any significant time off until the holidays when I drop two weeks to be at home with kids during their winter break. It's going to be a brutal few months.

Everyone who has not been on vacation in a year or more -- please look in the mirror. YOU are the reason you have not taken a vacation. Please do schedule one and take one.
Life is too short. Your job will still be there. You will experience something new. You will create family memories. You will recharge your batteries.
There is no one who dies and at the funeral speakers say - "he/she should have worked harder and put in more hours on the job." Many times the exact opposite is true -- they spent too many years as a slave to the job and their family and relationships and personal growth suffered from it.

At the end of their lives, so many of the wealthy turn to charitable works and efforts to help the less fortunate. This is because they realize that greedy Republicanism and me-me-me accummulation and hoarding is a recipe for miserable failure in life.

I'm 44 and I haven't had a vacation in 26 years since I lived at home with my parents. I enjoy my work. It funds my interest in restoring old cars and that's how I prefer to spend my free time and money.

Not trying to be mean, or maaking fun of your situation, but your parent has been senile and dying or 15 years? How can you be dying for 15 years?

Some people have to work to live while some live to work. I vaction to live. This world has become overpopulated and I do my best not to contribute to the destruction of the planet we call home.
Alcohol and grass are renewable resources.

That's a long time but not that unusual. Younger folks who haven't yet hit the age where you have to start dealing with aging parents have lots of fun to look forward to.
parents caught in the middle right now are just screwed. kids who can't find jobs and never move out, and aging parents who live forever but need fulltime care.

I'm not sure how that's going to work either. To date, Medicaid has been what pays after all of the person's assets are exhausted (which happens very quickly in the case of most people). It can't handle all of the old folks that we're going to have hitting that point at the same time soon. Especially with people tending to hang on longer now.

Plenty of staycations, getting shit squared away, and drinking all day, and just being on my time not being rushed.
I should go somewhere but I don't want to spend a few grand going to the beach, when it's just me.

Actually, I was primarily referring to taking care of a special needs child, in sympathy with another poster. Beyond the time commitment, it's a huge financial drain. Combine that with a parent who spent five years in a nursing home before succumbing. I feel guilty about this, but it was far enough away that I couldn't visit often. But that's where my vacation time went.
btw i worked private sector i got 1 day off / week and NO SICK DAYS and NO DAYS OFF for quite a while. they worked me 12-16 / day (else i'm fired) and was paid less than min wage for doing skilled labor
so what you say, what you say, fairfax gov
the more you say the less i believe
yea i was hoping to get to the beach as well ... to say the least
