The real reason they're going to attack Syria is that they've been bombing the supply lines to the rebels. US, UK, France, Saudi Arabia, and Qatar are engaged in a war against Syria.

The president must seek Congressional approval for any military action.

Some are opposed because there'll be an expectation to place ground troops (not CIA or special ops) if this doesn't succeed in changing the balance. Personally, I don't care as both sides are despicable in many ways. Regimes on both sides are devastating the general population with their tactics. This will be another Iraq with many dead and many displaced for no other reason to obtain strategic advantage over oil and gas resources. Russia currently controls Syria. China, Russia, and France were previously awarded the oil contracts under Saddam. Despite hope that US companies would be rewarded by the new government of Iraq, the US has effectively lost out in Iraq except for Kurdistan.
