is it getting weirder to not be a Facebook user?

It at least used to be ok to not use Facebook. Now it seems like it's so mainstream, people think that if you only login to your account once every few months, you're anti-social. I'll admit it seems like an awesome way to keep in touch with people I don't see any more cause I'm not in college, and people have moved away, etc. Sometimes I don't have a reason to send a whole email to an old friend (seems like to much), but making a short comment on a photo or something helps keep contact. I just don't like how it's all mined and sent to the NSA and all that shit. That's why I don't use it. It's pretty damn mainstream now though. Seems like most people have just accepted that everything is "out there." :/

It has been concluded that those who don't use social media are unliked by their peers and no one WANTS to keep in contact with them. FB is only for people with friends and family. Only psychopaths don't have FB.

Think about it...most people use FB to share things about their lives, show their friends and family how they're doing and to see how others are doing.

People who don't have that, don't have friends or family who care to keep in touch with them. Even my grandmother has FB and posts more shit than I do!

I mean, who doesn't want to keep in touch with someone? Sure you can "call" them but no one really does that anymore and emailing isn't really as popular as it once was, thanks to social media.

Only people who have little to no human contact are those without social media sites.

I agree. It's just how this data is collected and used by corporations and government agencies that kinda creeps me out. A little paranoid, yeah maybe. But I think that is a different kind of weird than people who have no facebook friends and don't want any.. I have plenty and would like to keep in touch, just don't wanna put everything online. I dunno. I will probably join the masses at some point and use facebook more.

Very paranoid. The NSA doesn't care about little people like yourself. If you aren't doing anything wrong then you have nothing to worry about.

i dont get how or why people are so afraid of the NSA when it comes to facebook..you control what you post on facebook so if you dont want them watching you..dont put anything on your page that will be a red flag? it's that simple..some people act like they are being mind controlled and can't help it so they must stay away from facebook all together..makes no sense.

The NSA watches and logs everything you do on the internet

but if you have nothing to hide why worry or care so much? everyone knows everything you do online is logged so why the outrage about it now?

No, you don't control everything. Facebook tracks your naive ass all over the Interwebs. Every page that has one of their dumb 'like' buttons tracks you. Every interaction that you have with anyone even tertiary relationships are tracked. Common email addresses used, whatever you buy, etc., etc. Facebook makes the NSA look like nothing. About the most intrusive thing I've ever seen.

sometime in the future you may be pulled over for a traffic citation and the cop is going to log into the NSA database and see an outline of what you post on here and arrest you for some type of trump up charges.

trust me it is already getting there

i still want to know whats going on about the internet drivers licenses that are suppose to be coming into effect with the background screening anf yada yada. concerns me to no end

Data is often used for purposes well beyond it's original intent. There was an article out the other day about a lending company looking at a person's FB friends to determine, at least in part, that person's creditworthiness. The feeling is that people associate with those who are similar and therefore have similar habits, including spending and repayment habits. There was another one about a lender demanding eBay, Twitter, and FB account access before approving loans. Granted, this isn't mainstream, but these things start out small.

I only go on Facebook to talk to my cousin who lives hundreds of miles away. If he got rid of his facebook for any reason then I have no reason to use Facebook.
My high school friends have all moved on.

As for new friends in real life, people nowadays are either unsocial (which is acceptable, cause of the Iphone/tech era influence) or just really fickle.

The best time to make "real" friends is when you were in elementary to high school. After that, it's nearly impossible.

And those 3 articles are bullshit. The comment section speaks for itself.

As have all of the rest of the cool people.

Facebook began its long, slow inevitable descent into AOL-like irrelevance when they opened it up beyond college kids and turned it into a massive commercial data mining sponge.

It may take a while since it's become so pervasive and they'll make a ton of money along the way but it's on its way out. Growth is stalling and people are using it less and spending less time there when they do.

Riiiight. Until the politicians decide that they think your politics are wrong and decide to harass you.

Unfortunately trust and government can no longer be used in the same sentence.

It's getting more common for employers to ask a job interviewer to log in to their facebook account for them so they can make sure no shenanigans is going on. Lexus Nexus provides search capabilities on Facebook data for employers. You won't even hear back about that job you applied for. Maybe the statistical model that they have developed on you does not show you are the personality they want. This stuff is actually pretty creepy. I used to work in market research and I did a fair amount of data collection. In the 2008 election, it was said that 700 variables were available on each voter, for marketing purposes. Call me paranoid... it creeps me out.
