Los Angeles Unified School District went for almost 20 years without building a new high school. Back in the late 90's. they found land to build, negotiated a price with the seller, and began to work on an 8,000 student facility. They then found WII munitions burried on the property and the whole project was scrapped.

Large plots of land suitable for schools in the City of Los Angeles and LA County are very expensive.

I agree that land in LA is expensive, but given the problems with the LA school district, building a school that is supposed to be a work of art is a bit much to take.

And even worse, this is just the latest of THREE stupid schools...

from the article:

...The RFK complex follows on the heels of two other LA schools among the nation's costliest — the $377 million Edward R. Roybal Learning Center, which opened in 2008, and the $232 million Visual and Performing Arts High School that debuted in 2009....

With a 65% drop out rate at that school it should have never been built. They should have put clifton ES on wheels and trucked it across the country. Boom problem solved. All the dems are probally soo proud of that school

Only an entire University should cost that much. You can build a whole High school in Ffx. for $50 Million, and it'll hold between 1/2 and 2/3 the number of students as this school.

Maybe they got some of the city officials from Bell to advise on this project.

While I know my Democratic cred will get rapped for this, the municipal unions in Cali, MD, and points NE of there have gotten too damn powerful.
