This is crazy, it seems like just when you get a car with a lot of power and speed, the bar gets jacked up in terms of engine output by the manufacturers. Look at the 2011 Mustang/Mustang GT. Now the Mustang GT is receiving a 100 HP boost over the 2005-2010 models, and it's running akin to the 2003-2004 SVT Cobras (Which at the time, produced 130 HP over the GT models). The Shelby GT500 (AKA, the latest Cobra), is having its power output increased to 550 HP,510 lb/ft-TQ., which is a 50 HP,30 lb/ft-TQ over the current GT500. Guess what else? The 2011 V6 Mustang is now producing as much as power as the previous 2005-2010 V8 GT models! This is really getting crazy.
However, there is a major downside. First off, despite the new GT having as much power as the 2003-2004 Cobras, it weighs more (The 500 HP Shelby GT500 was posting similar times to the "Terminator" (AKA 2003-2004 SVT Cobras), despite a 100 HP difference between the two). Also, it costs the same as the previous Cobra ($30k-$35k), whereas the new V6 model costs the same as the previous GT ($27k-$30k).
Despite this, some insane knucklehead in the specs. department thinks that the new GT will be running the 1/4 Mile as fast as the S/C'd Cobra, and that it will achieve 0-60 MPH in an even quicker manner. I guess we'll have to wait and see, but I sort of doubt it. If a 500 HP Mustang of the latest generation can barely beat a 390 HP Mustang from the previous one (8th Generation), then I don't see how a 400 HP ride from the latest generation (9th Generation) can do it. It all depends upon the curb weight, so we'll see how much Ford has been able to lighten the loads here.
