Like I said, there are more rational arguments one might try to make against gays in the military. There's no rational argument (edit: and I'm not insinuating that wTL is for or against gays in the military). Being gay doesn't interfere with people's abilities to be a plumber, landscaper, accountant, executive, orlawmaker, so why a soldier? Personally, I have no issue with gays serving openly in the military. The "rational" argument would be the initial wave of personnel issues you would have with long-serving officers like Sheehan who can't accept the change. Ultimately it would not be an issue. But initially, I think you could anticipate four or five years of problems within the ranks as the homophobic idiots are weeded out.

Most Generals enter executive ranks when they retire. When they go into public service, they usually start as a GS-15 or SES ranks. If they go into the private sectors, they always start out in senior management.

In 1969, I was on NATO maneuvers in Grafenwoher, Germany with Operation
Reforger One and even back then, the Dutch Army was noted for it's
"relaxed" attitude. Their soldiers had hair down to their shoulders
and they were openly smoking weed on duty. Their scores during the
maneuvers were terrible and they really didn't care. Alright, so they
allow gays to serve openly now too, but the General didn't provide enough
details about the incident for me to draw conclusions. (for instance were
they having an orgy when they should have been posting a guard mount?)
Just because the Dutch and some others may allow "open serving" that does
not mean we have to do the same. I for one am totaly opposed to the repeal
of "DADT" because of the negative impact it would have on morale, especially
in garrison status. BTW, I'm not under any obligation to go along with
something just because some of the liberals think it's such a wonderful
idea. Carl Levin has never been in the military and has no perception
whatsoever of what he speaks.

Yes, they are heroes for what they did. My point wasn't to denigrate them. My point was it is absurd to blame a failed mission on sexual orientation while ignoring other factors that probably contributed more. If any of the troops involved in botched mission in Somalia were closeted gays (odds are there may be one or two in there somewhere), does that mean THAT's the reason for that botched mission? Or the fact that there were a whole lot of fuck-ups starting with the focus of the mission itself and ending with inadequate personnel and equipment to do the job?

No you are right - in Africa I think they were being prosecuted for raping the local women and girls they were supposed to be helping. It seems obvious the UN forces (from some of these other countries) have a problem keeping themselves busy enough protecting folks, they have to go out and fuck them over at the same time.

Does anyone remember the Officers Bachelor quarters in San Diego on a USNavy base? It just happened to be in a design of a swastika. Do you really believe that was an accident? Those original plans were signed off on by lots of different eyes, and high ranking too I might add. It was a running joke at least in the Marines to have said you stayed there at some point. Or, maybe it wasn't a joke at all? It was quiet by accident that I discovered this nugget of information, As we were leaving there back in 2000, I ran across a friend of mine who was giddy over the fact. This is sick, but this environment exists. So, you are surprised at this General. I guess what you don't know can't hurt you? This mindset is rampant.

active duty military overwhelmingly oppose repeal of DADT. That
