The Great Tit was originally described under its current binomial name by Linnaeus in his 18th century work, Systema Naturae.[2] Its scientific name is derived from the Latin parus "tit" and maior "larger".[3]
A number of former subspecies of the Great Tit have been separated out as a new species, known as the Cinereous Tit (Parus cinereus), which ranges across much of southern Asia. The Oriental or Japanese Tit (P. minor) has also previously been considered a subspecies, but now has specific status.
