This free phone is not actually an Obama phone, in fact it was started decades ago with landlines and went to cell phones during Bush's time so you could call them Bush phones. They are also not tax funded, but paid for by the USF which is funded by telecommunications companies who pass on the bill to consumers but they shouldn't so take it up with the telephone providers.

They really do. I know this single mom (white) who works part time retail, has 3 kids and gets all sorts of freebies. Food stamps, medicaid for doctor's visits, free school lunches, free SACC, etc., etc. Shit, if she or her kids go to the emergency room (even for an earache or some other bullcrap), she doesn't pay a dime. If I go, I have to meet my insurance deductible ($500), plus a $100 copay before the insurance will even pay for 80%.

Not really. It' actually a very good example of a public-private initiative.

The money has been collected by 25+ years and was applied to landlines. Under the Bush Administration, the program began to include cheapo, low-end cell phones (the ones that sell for under $10 at gas stations and discount stores).

TracFone provides the phones and minutes, and the recipients can buy more as needed.

I could see being upset if they gave away cars, iPhones or cable TV, but Tracfones are hardly luxury items and it's not worth getting worked up about, truly.

I would definitely like to make some comments regarding this article. I have been doing some research on the safelink plan, and from what I have read, it is a plan offered by the Tracfone company to low income households. Now, to say this phone is an "Obama phone" is to say that he is responsible for the phone itself. I am by no means affiliated with either party (although my views are more conservative than anything else), but I would like to come to the defense of this phone. My elderly parents, who no longer are able to work, are users of this plan. They paid their taxes throughout their working lives and are now living off of their savings and social security. Luckily, they qualify for this phone and use it only for emergencies. I understand not wanting our taxes to go to programs such as these, but this is what taxes are for, to better help serve our country's needs. Also, they have been using the phone for a little over a year now, so it can't be an Obama Phone because it was around before he was sworn into office. Best of luck to everyone and happy holidays. - started before Obama took office
- the program is run by Tracfone
- lifeline pays for the phones
