Nah. It will oscillate up and down for the next 6 to 9 months, but will probably end up around 10,000, once all the shit derivatives and CDOs and other funky debt as asset instruments are shaken out of the market.

Unfortunately for us, that probably means a lot of our wealth will be shed during the down cycles, and we won't gain much back during the up cycles. The real winners will be the people who can afford to buy our stocks when we panic and sell them at lows, and can ride out the storm in order to profit enormously in 2 to 5 years.

I don't want to own a ferrari. I don't want to waste my money on $4,000 oil changes for the rest of my life. I've spent my entire adult life trying to figure out how to become financially independent. I'm almost there.

I am wealthy enough to not have to worry about this "current economic crisis", and I don't care which way the market goes.

Why would I begrudge the buyer who benefits from my panic? I won't. I'm the buyer benefiting from everyone else's panic. I bought my gold in 2003, and I am now the person buying bargains.

Alias, you really have some fixation on drinking.

Say this with me "God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference".

You obviously have a drinking problem, and you are running around an online forum making accusations and trying to project your own problems onto others.

Call this number: (703) 876-6166 and ask for a "Where and When".

I'm guessing the floor is 8,000. I think intra-day it will go below 8,000, but will rebound before the end of the day.

It has already lost about 40% of its value from the high. I think a lot of the recession talk is already factored in.

Considering the plethora of bad news that came out today, I think the Dow held on to that 8,000 level pretty well. It closed a little below, but I wouldn't be surprised to see it climb back over tomorrow.

The trend, though, does appear to be downward and not sideways. I'll be interested to see what it does once the Big Three go under, as the Republicans wish. Republicans want to get rid of the UAW, so they will back the destruction of their support among Reagan Democrats in swing states like Ohio. Good luck with that.

I'm calling it at 6,800 and it will approach this level at somepoint in the Q2 2009.

Unemployment is projected to be another 2% points higher nationally and double-digits in industrial areas such as Detroit. Once these these folks lose their jobs, emergency savings kicks in and will deplete after 6 months for most (as many do not have the discipline to save, unfortunately). Aside from this, there's a whole mess of 5-year ARMs that haven't reset yet and most will in late 2009.

In other news, there's a small chance that crime rates will increase in this time period! I sure wish Blackberry would come out with the Blackberry-TASER option.

Sirius XM stock is now trading below 19 cents. I keep looking at that as an opportunity, but I give the company a 20% shot of going bankrupt. At the very least, they are probably going to announce a reverse stock split, and then there will be plenty more room to go down as they dilute the shares to payoff their massive debt.

Sirius XM has a stupid business model. I have said that for quite a while but everyone seems to think the company is great. Satellites can run into the billions of dollars to launch and maintain. Plus, given the altitude they have to orbit to be useful, they have a shorter lifespan and will need to be replaced in the not-to-distant future.

There are cheaper, and ultimately better, alternatives on the horizon. HD radio, for one. And now you are seeing WiFi radio units for cars that can pick-up Internet radio stations.

Sirius XM is a dead-end. It is the 8-Track Tapes of the 2Ks. It won't be around five years from now.

What does the altitude at which a satellite orbits have to do with its lifespan?

All satellites re-enter the atmosphere eventually. The Sirius and XM satellites are in low orbit in order to be accessible to the car satellite receivers. Any higher and the system simply wouldn't work. Because the satellites are in low orbit, they will be re-entering the atmosphere faster than, say, a weather satellite, which is in Geosynchronous orbit at a higher altitude.

Completely incorrect. XM's satellites (4 of them, 2 are back-ups) are in fact in geosynchronous orbit. Sirius's satellites (3 of them) orbit at a variable altitude, which at its maximum is higher than a geostationary orbit. Sirius's satellites were originally expected to have a lifespan of 15 years. That estimate has since been reduced slightly to 13 years.

I stand corrected. I used to work with imaging satellites and it is common to have more than one to fully map the Earth in a 24-hour period. I assumed that multiple satellites would have meant that they weren't geosynchronous. You know what they say about assuming...

I have a friend with a Phd that works for a major 3 letter intelligence agency. He is normally very rational, however lately he wants to spend thousands on gold and bury it in his back yard.

He tells me if I saw the shit he does behind closed doors re terrorism and the economy I'd be doing the same.

we have been in the shit for quite some time my friend. Its only when peps have trouble buying their 50" plasma screens they give a shit. We have lost over 4000 soldiers in Iraq and nearing another 2000 in Afaganastan-bannana-stand. Anyone freaking over that? nope.

You see part of the payback here is that we were asked to sacrifice nothing - nada, for our wars. Well folks they are not free. In fact they are very expensive. We cannot cut taxes and wage two wars no matter how gay you are for Ronald McDonald Regan. Math is math okay. Sorry.

Now everyone whom railed against fiscal conservatives for the last 8 years is crying a river because the opposition to the fake-conservatives - the Dems are going to use the government to try and solve some problems. It is too late for a real debate because those plasma screens, whether purchased with welfare on the poverty end or on the Executive end are starting to be at risk.

Read your history. War vitalizes economies, it doesn't destroy them. This current financial situation is not the result of a war. It is the result of home loans and very shady lending practices by banks. The cause isn't a hard one to identify, there have only been 39348298234384849392 news articles on it already.

The deficit is the result of the war, but the deficit isn't why the market crashed.

As for how long it'll go, I'm guessing somewhere in the mid to upper 5000s. The biggest problem we have now is that people keep dumping stocks every time some new financial analyst opens their mouth with portents of doom. When a government bailout plan isn't immediately effective, they pull out their money. When AIG reports it's god awful earnings reports, which was *not* a surprise, people pull out their money.

The stock market is nothing but a large gambling ring. When confidence is up, people buy. When confidence is down, people sell and then don't rebuy.

If it were just a stock market issue, things wouldn't be anywhere near this bad. It's a double punch of stock market losses and difficulty getting loans which causes depreciation of other prices.

Republicans...Bush is office nine months when 9/11, the largest terrorist attack ever on American soil, happens. Not Bush's fault. Barack Obama is in office five weeks and the stock market, reeling from an economic crisis created by Bush's failed policies, is down. Obama's fault.

Now I understand why you people consider Rush Limbaugh to be your leader.

I wouldnt worry too much. Too many Rich people have too much invested in the stock market to let it stay down for too long. They will find some artificial way to prop the markets back up or some bail out to stimulate the market before too long. The same way Gas prices are being kept from completely tanking at 1.80 something even though it COULD go lower but the oil/gas companies are holding of refining gasoline at the refineries so even though oil is at $40 bucks the spiget is slowed down at the refineries to make this flood of oil into gas.

Totally different dynamic than controlled commodities - this is speculative stock valuation and it is very fragile. Once a systemic run occurs it is like the China Syndrome - we will hit rock bottom in a matter of a week or two. Stay tuned, personally, I think it is unavoidable...

Prediction = 4000 - as more blue chips like GE make their way to gov bailout = worthless stocks, the indexes will get dragged down with them.... the commercial real estate bubble is only starting to pop and when it does it will be ugly..... and this will hasten the default on commercial paper held by the banks, insurance, private equity

I never sold and I kept buying index funds (about 500 bucks a month) through it all. Now I am rolling in cash. The big question now is should I cash out of the market now? I already pulled out enough to pay off my house if need be.
