Holy cold snap!! New cold record set by -10 DEGREES Celsius in Edmonton...

Edmonton shatters cold record
At -46.1 C, coldest city on the continent beats previous benchmark low by 10 degrees
http://www.edmontonjournal.com/technology/Edmonton+shatters+cold+record/2336460/story.html
Quote

EDMONTON — Edmonton's weather boasted two dubious distinctions Sunday: it was colder here than anywhere else in North America and it marked the coldest Dec. 13 in the city's history.

Environment Canada recorded a frigid minus 46.1 C, or minus 58.4 C with the wind chill, at the Edmonton International Airport at 5 a.m., said meteorologist Pierre Lessard.

The old record of minus 36.1 C was set last year.

"To break a temperature by 10 degrees is very exceptional," said Lessard.

The temperature record from Edmonton's city centre was also broken Sunday, said meteorologist John McIntyre.

Environment Canada recorded a temperature of minus 36.5 C downtown at 8 a.m. Sunday, beating the previous record for the day of minus 32.8 C in 1882, McIntyre said.

While Edmontonians may be wishing the weather gods would be a little less ambitious, there was at least one person in the city who could still see beyond the horrifying numbers on the thermometer.

"(Sunday) it was beautiful with the hoar frost on all the trees and the light was really misty," said Pamela Anthony, director of the Winter Light festival, a civic celebration of winter which launched last January and will run again from Jan. 6 to March 13 next year.

"It was almost cinematic. But it is hard to see if you are distracted by discomfort. The cold can be pretty intimidating. This is serious weather. You are a membrane of glass away from disaster and deep down, we all know it."

WTF? Not you too. Just because trolls were campaigning last week to expose who is who doesn't mean it is correct. It's like Vince saying you and Gravis and Jerry Rubin are the same.

In other cold news, the folks in Copenhagen have their own cold to deal with (The Australians are getting to be pretty funny about all of this)...

Delegates freeze as snow falls on global warming debates

...
Why UN organisers selected Copenhagen for the December summit remains a mystery. They might have had more success in drawing attention to the perils of hot weather if they had chosen Perth, where the temperature is forecast to reach 37 degrees this week, or Canberra where it will be 36.

A central issue at the summit is whether global warming should be limited to 1.5 degrees or 2 degrees. But some delegates are saying that Copenhagen in December might be more pleasant if it was about 15 degrees warmer.

Copenhagen is also being criticised as the summit venue by delegates because it is very expensive.

A cappuccino costs $A5, a beer at least $7, a small hot dog from a street stand $8, and a "cheap", simple lunch dish can easily cost $30.

And I would not want to be in Russia these days either...

Let's remember BB - YOU decided to come and post your "fuck off who cares" post here. Notice, I tend to not post in your threads when you all are off on random tangents - it's called "not interested in whatever you are peddling". If you don't care, or think my topic is boring, you have plenty of your own space to dwell in? No?

You want to post like a bunch of 13 year olds to entertain yourselves, have at it. Whether I find it boring or not is irrelevant, evidently you all are entertained by it, so enjoy yourselves.

Ft. Yukon, AK broke a record last year, when the Temp. hit -80 Deg. F. (Without the Wind Chill). Up on Mt. Denali is can hit -120 Deg. F. (Antarctic Temps).

I need to find it, but one of the guys at the big Radio Station up in Fairbanks, AK held up a sign last year that said "GLOBAL WARMING", all while he was standing in front of one of the big screen Temperature readouts that said "-43 Degrees". They even made an Ice Sculpture of a shivering Gore up there, and invited him to come on up, but he has yet to do so. Just about no one up there believes his crap, not even a majority of the scientists.

Does anyone remember last January when it hit -10 F. around here, and the Wind Chill was 15 Below Zero? Trying to wash my windshield with bare hands in that was a real biatch.

Does fried food cook well in extremely cold conditions? How long would it take for the fryer to get hot enough to fry the food assuming it started at -40C? Assume a standard camping cook stove as the heat source.

Anyone? :)

Well, seeing how -40C is the same as -40F (For those wanting a Conversion), I would say that you'd need to prevent the grease from freezing first (Generally, even the hardiest of cooking oils freezes at -20C/-4F) . I have no idea about a fryer, lol, but I have seen a guy pull a camping stove out of his Big-Rig truck, and grill Caribou meat (Along with Vegetables) on the back of his Cab. It was in the Winter time (Temps -20F to -40F), while stuck up on a Mountain Pass on the "Ice Road" (A Traffic jam from an accident).

Toss even Hot Coffee out the window at -40C/F, and it'll turn to powder before it hits the ground. I knew a guy (USGS Researcher) who brought back some video and photos from Antarctica when it was -120F, and they tossed a pot of boiling water outside, but it turned into a cloud mid-air.

Upping my prediction from yesterday near 100% certainty of measurable snow, my guess for western Fairfax Co (where I am) is around 5-8", eastern Fairfax Co 6.5-9" possible. Though as always tis contingent upon the track of the storm any slight deviations east or west will lower/increase the totals. Nonetheless looks like a decent one on our hands.
