So Im in line at Giant behind a woman of Latin American origin with her two young kids. She is buying groceries and I notice using food stamps. My initial reaction is you know that is just fine - she needs help.

I mean she is cashing in food stamps for milk and Minute Maid OJ for her little ones. Im okay with that (even though it takes a long time). I notice that after the food stamp transaction she has another transaction that she pays cash for.

In the cash transaction she purchases a few items including some expensive ice cream bars (fruit bars that are quite good but frankly too expensive for my budget). It dawns on me the food stamps are for her kids only.

I was wondering are we paying for her kids because they were likely born here and thus citizens? My thoughts went to the fact that if this is the deal any human anywhere would be crazy not to come here illegally to not only give their children the gift of US citizenship but the absolute bonus of knowing the government will feed them for you.

Not really judging anyone here but it does seem that the system is unsustainable.

The kids probably qualify under WIC if they are U.S. citizens. As for the expensive ice cream bars, they probably don't qualify under WIC.

I guess poor kids aren't supposed to have ice cream.

Yes, and you're not alone in your "observation."

Immigration was the beginning of the end of the Roman empire, and they certainly weren't handing out food stamps to the Visigoths.

If an American illegally immigrated to Mexico or Cuba or Honduras or Puerto Rico and had a baby, is it reasonable to assume that the government would provide for them the same way that we provide for their illegals? Definitely not.

My issues with illegal immigration have nothing to do with race; it has everything to do with the fact that they fucked up their own countries, and now come here to fuck up ours. If the entire country of Quebec decided (realized?) it sucked up there and jumped the borders into the US in droves, I would feel the same way; learn to speak english, assimilate in to the culture.

Assimilation, though, is being viewed by the Hispanic cultures as stripping away their racial identity, so they want to have their cake and eat it, too. Instead of having a country full of Americans, we have a country of Asians, African Americans (lol), Hispanics, etc.

Either we'll wake up one day and deal with the problem, or the country will fall. Period.

I worked at a grocery store throughout college. I recall many times when WIC parents would come in and through a case a beer on the converyer belt right alongside their Juicy Juicy, cheese and milk.

There's really no way to know.

Citizenship isn't a requirement when applying for benefits on behalf of a baby
born in the US.

It's SUPPOSED to be, but no one complies with the laws anymore.
