Italian Food
Date: June 01, 2009 11:19PM

I really don't care for Italian food, and I don't get what the "big deal" is about it. Everyone I know says Italian is their favorite food. Really? Really??

Better than Mexican? Better than Chinese? Better than Thai, Indian or Good Ol' American?

Now, don't get me wrong. If you like it, that's fine. But for me, I'd rather take a pass on that shit.

Even Lasagna or Chicken Parmigiana? That shit gets me real sexy just thinking about.

As for "Better than Mexican? Better than..." I'm a fat kid so I don't know how to have a preference on food. I love all the food you mentioned...

I could do without the Indian food though.

Oh, I LOVES (yes, loves) ME some Indian food. Minerva at the Clocktower Shopping Center has the best Biryani, and their lunch buffet is the sheeet!

Italian is good, but not the best. For me, it's rarely filling and extremely overpriced.

+1 for all Asian cuisine.
+1 for Hispanic cuisine
+1 for fatass USA grub like BBQ, wings, and pizza (our own versions of course).

And dessert is universally great!

Ah so you've been doing your research huh!? I'm impressed...

In all seriousness I do have roots in Black Rock, Arkansas so I find the connection interesting.

The Minerva near 50/123 in Fairfax has an awesome (and huge) buffet. The chicken biryani always seems to be out, and it's fantastic.

That being said, I love italian food. It's a cuisine known throughout the world for the art of cooking and fine dining. How can you not like a bowl of spaghetti?

Who doesn't love Italian food? That's silly...carbs with some sort of sauce, what's not to like?!?! One of my favorites.

Although, I have an addiction to tacos (real tacos, before the sexual innuendos start)
Also Kabob places.

The only "style" I haven't been much of a fan of is Korean...but I'll eat Indian, Mexican, Ethiopian, Italian, Thai...or just grill me up a cheeseburger and some fries and put a toothpick version of old glory in it and shoot me a Talibany som'bitch!

...and now I'm hungry

I've always liked Maggiano's (but doesn't help the overpriced argument)
I ate somewhere in Vienna ones (Little Italy or something like that) that was decent too...otherwise, all the little chains are mostly the same...not bad, not good...better off cooking your own

Ha, I agree with you on Korean. I like it, but it ranks near the bottom of my list. Some stuff is really good, like bulgogi, but I'm never usually impressed with the side dishes and vegetables. Plus I hate when fish is served with the head still on it, and it seems like they always serve it that way at Korean places.

Another cuisine that ranks low for me is Barbecue. I know I'll get booed for that, but I just don't get it. It's good, it's sort of hard not to like grilled meat, but I just don't see the appeal and don't understand why people are so crazy about it.

BOO

Just kidding...I think people like BBQ because people love to argue (see: www.fairfaxunderground.com) And BBQ is something people love to argue about (Carolina bbq, Texas bbq, tomato based vs. vinegar, etc.)
I love pulled pork with a vinegar based bbq, but I'll agree it's nothing amazing or spectacular. I theorize that people love bbq so they have something to argue over...while eating bbq of course.

and now I know I'm bored because I've posted to a thread about italian food three times in 20 minutes.

Have you been to Bonaroti's in Vienna? Their food is amazing, and the service is outstanding. You can get a sampler of their pastas of the day as an appetizer (it's not on the menu) and not have to make that inevitable decision of pasta vs. meat. I love their stuffed shrimp with risotto, and their Osso Bucco is always delicious. Really, you can't go wrong there. It is my favorite! Well, that and Melting Pot because I adore cheese.

Ha ha ha! Eh, food always conjures up a nice conversation -- who doesn't love food? Well, I guess you don't if you're anorexic, but that's a whole other can of worms.

I LOVE BBQ, but there really isn't a place around here to get GOOD BBQ. There was a place in Vienna called Three Pigs that had awesome BBQ ribs and chicken, but they closed suddenly (BALLS!) and another place in Manassas Park across from the ghetto apartments with the fence, but they vanished, too. If anything, I think BBQ Country in Vienna is the best in the area, but haven't been there for ages as I don't have to leave my Herndon/ Reston bubble too often (I love working close to home!) I prefer to make it at home, and order sauce from Oklahoma. http://www.headcountry.com/

I've been to Bonaroti, but it was like ten years ago and I forget what I had. I remember really liking it though. Honestly, I think Pizza Hut makes the best Italian food I have ever eaten.

(j/k, I really like Da Domenico in Tysons, and Pistone's at 7 Corners is really good too)

My uncle gets some bbq from BBQ World (it's either Fairfax or Springfield or Burke...that area where all three meet a couple miles from GMU). They've been pretty good.
My favorite bbq though (other than home made) is from Pierce's...however, that's in Williamsburg and really doesn't help anyone here in Fairfax. Whenever I go down there I bring up about 10 quarts of their pulled pork and freeze it or give some to my parents, etc. Famous Daves is probably the best food chain bbq in the area (and that's not saying much).

Uptown in Herndon makes the best authentic pizza around.

Authentic = not loaded with cheese, salty meat and sugary sauce. Their entrees and salads are great too. I never leave there hungry.

Maggianos in Reston is good too. Albeit a little pricey.

I'll eat spaghetti or penni pasta with olive oil and basil if we end up at an Italian place, but my point is I think it is over-rated and I certainly wouldn't choose to eat at an Italian place on my own. I just think it is interesting that I am treated like some sort of heretic by family and co-workers when I go "eh," while everyone else is raving about the food. It's not that it isn't a great cuisine. It just doesn't suit my taste.

The typical Italian joints serve Americanized Italian food. Heavy on the sauces. Real Italian food is nowhere near as loaded. At least that's what I remember from my 10 days in Italy in 1989.

I'm all for some good Cajun food. Okra's in old town Manassas is killer. A little pricey, but not bad.

Going to a "red sauce joint" and ordering pasta is not very thrilling. You gotta hit places that have real chefs or people who've been trained in Italian cuisine, not just how to cook pasta and throw sauce on it. There's this great dish at Da Domenico, it's grilled veal medallions served with a garlicky wine sauce over a bed of sauteed spinach leaves and grilled marinated mushroom, sprinkled with slices of fresh basil and proscuitto. It's fucking great. Order stuff like that and you will see why pasta & sauce are the boring side of Italian cuisine.

available in Tuscany?

MAESTRO: You didn't find one, did you?

JERRY: No. I'm not really looking.

MAESTRO: Nor should you.

JERRY: So are you telling me there's not one house to rent in all of Tuscany?

MAESTRO: The houses are passed down from generation to generation, it's very hard.

JERRY: I can't get a sublet, a guest room, a cot, nothing?

MAESTRO: It's booked solid!

I've been to "real Italian places" in New York. The kinds of restaurants that are in old brownstones in residential neighborhoods that have 70-year-old Italian guys in tuxes as waiters. It's all very good by Italian food standards. It's just not my cup of tea.

Yeah, places that screw it up are using the frozen stuff that comes pre-breaded. Usually what you get if you order it from a sports bar or TGIF-type place. Two places in my 'hood where you can get great calamari: Maggiano's and Legal Seafood. You can tell they're using fresh squid and breading it themselves. Both places have nice bar areas where you can order a bunch of beers and split a few plates of a calamari. Most Thai places seem to do a good job with calamari too.

Bonarati is pretty good. The decor is stuck in the 1960s (like many Vienna restaurants).

The best italian food in DC is at Teatro Goldoni on K Street. You're gonna pay for it, though. I'll also recommend Il Fornaio in Reston. My father is a first generation, full blooded, Italian American and the only places that he has approved of are the two I just mentioned, with his preference being Il Forniao.

Outside of DC (which is poor on the Italian availability (there is/was no fishing industry nor large scale shipping here, so no concentration of Italians)), you need to go to Vacarros or Sabatinos in Baltimore.

The worst place for calamari is Glory Days. They have "Rhode Island calamari," which is processed sticks of squid, kind of like fried cheese sticks. The breading is heinous.

I ordered it once. About 1/4 into it the waiter came back by and said, with a scowl on his face, "Do you like that?"

Am I wrong, or should the waiter have given me fair warning? I know I didn't ask, but usually if a waiter or waitress feels strongly that something is shit, they will volunteer it if you try to order it.

You are wrong for ordering Calamari at Glory Days to begin with. The waiter probably assumed you were a re-re and assumed someone like you would eat horse shit if pit on a plate.

SERIOUSLY, who the fuck eats anything from Glory Days expecting it to taste anything above mediocre?!?!!? The LAST thing someone should order from a place like that is seafood. You claim they should have warned you if it was shit. I have news for you, you are in fucking Glory Days! Most waiters are assuming your palate is a bit unrefined to be eating there in the first place.

I love calamari. Worst I ever had was at Alto Plazo. When it first opened, my wife and I ate there on the top floor (oooh, fancy). Ordered the calamari as an appetizer, as we do anywhere we go that sells it, just to try different kinds. It was horrible. Now, some people might like this, but this is what their dish consisted of:
Squid
Fish
Crab meat (If I recall correctly)
Cilantro
Vinegar

It was cold, bitter and not what I was expecting. I think it might have been good if I wasn't expecting a plate of fried squidlings and dipping sauce...but when a cup of seafood salad (a la fruit salad) came out, I was not happy.

Anyway, calamari is awesome when done right. I prefer it with Asian sauces (Big Bowl in Reston is decent as well as Costal Flats...but still not quite the fresh, authentic calamari people crave)

I ordered calamari at Alto Plaza soon after it opened, and got just a regular plate of fried, breaded squid. No fish, crabmeat, or vinegar (WTF??). I'm not sure why they'd be serving anything else with it nowadays, that is strange.

It was actually decent calamari too. However, the waiter really boasted their "ancho chili" dipping sauce, so I tried it. And I should've known better, because this stuff was straight up BBQ sauce. And barbecue sauce DOES not belong near calamari. It was such an odd combination I'm actually surprised they would serve something like that. Luckily the waiter was nice enough to bring me marinara after I told him the "ancho chili" was a failure.

The idea thst they are now bringing out vinegar with it is completely mindboggling!

Are you sure you didn't accidentally get ceviche?

I guess I could've ordered the wrong thing. It was our first time there and their menu on the third floor is different from the first two floors (supposed to be ritzier, but really was just limited). This was about a year or two ago, so I don't recall...but knowing me it was probably something different and I just saw the word "calamari" and jumped on it. Either way, people who aren't me apparently like it because it came highly recommended by the server.
Guess I should be more careful when trying to look smooth in front of the wife.

Ceviche is minced pieces of uncooked seafood marinaded in lime juice (or other citrus juice). It usually has like onion and hot pepper mixed in, I guess maybe cilantro too. It's also served cold. That's probably what it was, although I've never heard of vinegar being used (unless you mistook the acidity of the fruit juice for vinegar).

That actually makes me laugh. If you were expecting calamari, but they actually brought out ceviche- no wonder you were so disappointed! That must have been sorta freaky.

Goldoni is the worst italian I've ever been too. The place is dirty, overpriced, there is mold all over the restrooms, the people who run it are jerks, and the place smells something awful. We had to wait forever to get our reserved table, and the waiter (who was wearing dirty clothes I should add) was really rude to my wife. When I asked him about it, he just muttered curse words under his breath and walked away. The food took forever to come, and it sucked. The bread was stale, and the soup was so salty I couldn't even eat it. When I complained to the manager he basicly told me he was real busy and if we didn't like it we should just go somewhere else. My wife got really sick later that night, and we swore never to go back. What's worse is that they charged my credit card twice and when I called to complain it took me almost a week to get a manager on the phone, and then like three months to remove the erroneous charges! Stay away from this clip joint, it's terrible.

authentic pizza would only be dough and cheeze. seriously, that's the only thing in the original pizza. chicago is the real inventor of pizza as we know it.

Not ignorance. It's not really common to see that around here, and I only learned about it from a trip to Miami a few years ago. I think it's more popular out on the west coast.

Yeah, processed squid sounds nasty. It needs to be fresh. Your waiter was an ass for doing that. A good waiter will never make negative comments about the restaurant's food. It's their job to provide a welcoming environment.

As far as the idiot ragging on Glory Days, I don't think it's bad. I've been to the one at Pan Am a few times over the past couple years. They serve typical "american grill" and pub fare. If you're expecting anything else, that's your own fault you didn't like it. They have a mushroom-swiss burger on the menu that's actually pretty good. Decent cole slaw too. Their fries aren't that great though, they taste like they are frozen fries.
