how dare they regulate smoking EVEN MORE?!

Obama signs tobacco bill into law
US President Barack Obama has signed into law America's strongest anti-smoking measure ever, saying it will save lives.

The US Food and Drug Administration now has new powers to regulate the content and marketing of tobacco products.

Hailed as a milestone in the history of tobacco regulation, the bill was passed by Congress earlier this month.

About one in five Americans smoke and some 440,000 die each year of smoking-related illnesses.

Mr Obama said in the White House Rose Garden: "When I ran for president, I did so because I believed that... it was possible for us to bring change to Washington."

He added: "Today, despite decades of lobbying and advertising by the tobacco industry, we passed a law to help protect the next generation of Americans from growing up with a deadly habit that so many of our generation have lived with."

Tougher regulation was stiffly opposed by the industry and tobacco's political backers.

Before now, tobacco was more lightly regulated than cosmetics or pet food, and previous attempts at FDA regulation were struck down by the Supreme Court as requiring congressional approval.

just thought it would be fun to post because there seem to be so many pro-smoking people on FU. oh and why arent be taxing the hell out of these advertisements (or are we)?

I don't think it's actually going to make less people smoke (or make people smoke less for that matter). Tobacco is a drug, though, and I guess it's only appropriate that the FDA have a say in it.

it's nicotine that's the drug, tobacco is just the carrier.

Ok, fair enough! Not much of a fan of synecdoche? Would you similarly correct someone for calling pot or mushrooms a drug?

edit: dern prepositions...

Whats crazy is that legal tobacco kills over 440,000 Americans a year and illegal marijuana kills 0 Americans a year. Good job government at protecting your citizens!

I am sure if weed became legal, you would see statistics and studies showing the harmful effects. But keep smoking it Dwight, at least you can't have kids when your nutsack is filled with tumors.

i would prefer the public have something kills some people as opposed to a drug that makes them stupid. there are enough stupid people in the world.

i smoke and i fully agree that it should be illegal. atleast this bill lets them regulate all of the shit they add to the tobacco to make it much worse than it already is.

even if carcinogines have been found, there are still 0 recorded deaths from pot use. Smoking and alcohol kill about 500,000 a year ... pot has killed zero, ill stick with those odds.

It is the smoke that causes cancer. Neither Nicotine or THC cause cancer. The burning of the oils and fibers of the plant is what causes cancer. The irritant of the smoke on the lungs is what causes cancer. Hell, overcooking a steak or cooking with oil at too high a temperature creates carcinogens. Diesel engines spew carcinogens that cause more lung cancer than smoking and asbestos combined. Nobody is considering banning diesel buses, french fries and well-done hamburgers.

Eating Marijuana or using a vaporizer probably eliminates most or all of the carcinogenic properties/effects.

Marijuana is still safer than Nicotine in that there is a realistically achievable LD50 for nicotine, but it would be absolutely impossible to ingest the LD50 amount of THC.

(which is why it is alway funny to hear people say "marijuana is more dangerous now than in the 60's because it has a higher concentration of THC" as a way of scaring boomer parents into being afraid that their kids are in danger, because even with 10% THC, versus the 3-5% of the mexican shit they smoked back then, it would still be impossible to overdose on today's "stronger" marijuana.)

actually i read something a while back that said that nicotine also causes cancer. Thus kind of defeating the purpose of the nicotine gum thing. Im way to lazy to google the link however.

Mighty wikipedia also says that nicotine is not on the list of known carcinogens...

I had my doubts about nicotine being a carcinogen. I mean, sure, if you want to split hairs and be really broad and general, just about everything we ingest, breathe or absorb through our skin is, to some degree, contributing to cancer. Since cancer is just a group of cells that divided in a mutated and uncontrolled manner, and everything in the world can trigger or contribute to a bad cell division.
