the other day some kid from buffalo asked me where toronto is. most kids in school still attribute communism to Russia, even though Russia and eastern European countries are no longer of the Soviet Union. half the kids in our county's high schools still think the Middle East and South Asia share the exact same geographical location, culture, and religion, connecting it all to homogeneous terrorism (i'm not saying terrorism isn't rampant in certain nations in the middle east, because it IS.) but they senselessly generalize, and don't quite care about anything at all. students will donate to a "save darfur" drive, only to get the free t-shirt or cookie, to fit in with their friends, who also don't really care, and don't know what country Darfur is in. or where that country is. they think that Africa is one large country. and so did one of our nominees for VP a few months ago.

I used to work with a guy who thought Scandinavia was a country. This was someone who graduated from college, too. Stuff like this really makes me wonder about our educational system.

I must agree with TheMeeper. I lived in Europe for much of my life, and got most of my elementary school education there. What a difference when I came over here. My grades suffered because of 30+ kids in a room, when I was used to no more than 18 or so per room. I already knew so much more about the world than the other kids here too. Not to mention, most of the grade you get here is just Homework. The tests are curved as well, so really where is the learning part? There's no reason that If I don't do some homework that I should have a damn C, D, or F, when my tests are all A's.
We really need to step up our game here. Let's start with getting rid of "No child left behind". Because frankly, that just causes kids to learn enough to take a stupid standardized test. I was rushed through everything when I got here, just to take a damn "SOL". I'm so glad I'm over with it.

well..you are smarter then most on here...you got one out of three right! Though I think everyone could rally around fiscal responsibility and discuss for hours what that actually means. So...maybe youre correct on 2 of 3....that puts you at the top of the class.

The younger generation needs to learn from the older generation. It takes age and experience to properly navigate society. That being said, while the youth culture exists and all the kids are busy with the latest fads from the Jonas brothers and what style jeans they are wearing serious adults are getting down to business and running the country. The idea that the youth have all the motivation, ideas and drive is a fallacy. The youth are just place holding and being kept happy with puerile things within culture while adults get on with the real business of society.
