An IP address alone will not give the person that much information. A lot of IP's on this site are faked or spoofed anyway.

How do you even get another person's IP address from this site?

Post a link to an image on a server you control, and you'll get a list of the IP's that have opened the thread. Compare that list to the time stamps on the posts, and you can sorta figure out who is who.

Also, if you go into the Chat feature, your IP can be determined by the server ident that gets assigned to you.

The professor sounds like a complete idiot. If he really worked for NIH and Microsoft, he doesn't anymore.

Ok so he can maybe figure out which wireless router the signal is going through. I'm guessing the signal came from a dorm with probably 300 people in it. He could compare the class list to people in that dorm but still it could be somebody just visiting the dorm.

He must of not had a backup because the way to trigger duplicate windows notification is install with the same key. Recovering a backup won't do it.

Sounds like he is really afraid that the student might find something that is very incriminating for him on this laptop. Love letters to a mistress? Strange Porn?

He was just angry and thought he could lay it on thick and scare the thief into giving it back. Too bad a more likely reaction to having the SEC, FTC, NIH and US Marshal after you would be to destroy the evidence completely and bury it six feet deep along a riverbank. No physical evidence, no proof other than circumstantial evidence like Lurker mentioned in his first paragraph (unless the student was dumb enough to sign into his own email or use a online shopping cart using the prof's laptop).

I wonder how many people in that class really believed all the bullshit that professor was spewing.

Getting the IP address is pretty easy. But that really doesn't get you very far. You can know what service provider they use or which corporate network they are on, get a general idea of the geographical region they are in, but that's about it.

It is possible to get personal info, but it would require having access to quite a few things. A site administrator couldn't do much, it's not like there is a piece of software that will give them access to a database that allows comparing IP addresses to actual people. Only service providers keep records about their users, there's no central database or anything.

Besides, at best, you will get the name of the person who opened the account at that service provider. What about a group of people renting a house together, sharing a cable modem? If there are 4 or 5 people living in that house, all with different last names, you'll never know anyone but the person whose name is on the cable bill. But do even get that much info, you'd most likely have to work at the cable company.

One method would be to track down that IP address on USENET postings, or other forums that for whatever reason post the IP address or whatever, and hope you can find the person's name being used elsewhere.

Another method, but you would need to work for that online commerce site, would be to search for that IP address in sales records.

Now, if someone has registered a domain name and points it at their own IP address (even through a redirector if they have a dynamic IP) then it would be really easy to figure out who they are -- just do a whois.

Like I said, "get a general idea of the geographical region they are in".

Not all target hosts are located at or near the address of the organization to which
the host’s IP address is registered. For example, one author’s home IP address in Ottawa falls in the
address block 70.24.0.0/13. ARIN lists the registrant for this block as: Rogers Cable Inc. (ROCA), One
Mount Pleasant, Toronto, Ontario, M4Y 2Y5, Canada. So this technique would geolocate the author’s
PC (with very poor precision) to Toronto, 450 km from its true Ottawa location (albeit, still with correct
country-level resolution). More generally, this technique may map large address blocks to a single
location, even when not all addresses in the block are used by individual devices at that location.

That is like knowing someone's zip code and thinking you know where they live.

Yeah, I suppose if you're willing to lob a few warheads at the general area the person's IP address is from, you'll probably have a high probability of getting the guy.
