Sirius on Broadcast Radio
Date: November 10, 2008 10:16AM

I wonder if anyone else has run into this.

Once in a while, while driving along I-66 between Exits 62 and 64, I will pick-up The Howard Stern Show on 88.3 FM. This is the actual Sirius satellite feed coming over a broadcast band.

For the longest time I couldn't figure out what the deal was. But I discovered the source today.

That section of road is always bumper to bumper. The show came on today and I was listening. Suddenly the feed started changing. First to music, then to talk, then to the NFL Network, then back to Howard Stern. I came to the realization that the car behind me, a black Prius with an Obama sticker on the bumper, must be using a wireless device to feed the signal to 88.3 FM on the dial and that I was picking it up.

However, it only worked when I was in front of the car. When the Prius passed me (that's when I saw the Obama sticker) the signal faded out.

Has anyone else experienced this? At one point I was ahead by about 1/4 mile and I could still pick it up.

88.1 and 87.9 are also good frequencies to pick up XM or Serius. listenability depends on where on your car your antenna is, and how close you are to the broadcasting devise in another car. Getting near trucks or pick up trucks usally increases you opportunity to hear XM or Serius radio in my opinion.

Sometimes in heavy traffic you will drift from picking up one broadcasting devise to another as you are moving. The combined company is planning on introducing better devises that will not send out such a heavy signal, so enjoy it while you can.

Since they run repeats of Stern all day, also try it on your way home, you may be surprised getting Stern at night.

Listenability??? When the fuck did that become a word? IMO, there are too many ridiculous words accepted into today's vernacular. What's next...conversating?

I am sorry, let me clarify; “listenability” is a radio term with two meanings; A) the quality of hearing a specific broadcast juxtaposed with any broadcast interference (used by engineers). B) The quality of the actual spoken sentences on the air. You don’t say “the temperature right now is…, ” you say (the more pleasing to the ear and brain) “the current temperature is ….”

I understand that it is a word, but it still doesn't sound like a real word (i.e. conversating). Also, considering the context of the original post, wouldn't have 'reception' been a more appropriate word choice?

After market satellite receivers can be retrofit to existing car stereos a few different ways. You can plug the receiver directly into the antennae input on your car stereo, insert a cassette tape type device into your cassette deck, or use an FM modulator device that broadcasts to a couple of different preset stations. You are picking up somebody else's FM modulator.

Very funny! The fact of the matter is that 'listenability' is not a word. Listenable is in the Mirriam-Webster dictionary, but there was no entry for 'listenability'. All I was saying, is that too many people today use made up words like 'conversating', etc. As time goes on they become accepted as regular words when they are completely ridiculous to begin with. Look at the word 'commentator'. What does he do? He comments on the game, right? Well, thanks to modern sports broadcasting, the verb 'commentating' is now an official word of the English language. IMO, that word is exactly like conversating, a bastardization of the verb converse, and the English language as a whole.

END.

American Heritage Dictionary - Cite This Source - Share This
lis·ten·a·ble (lĭs'ə-nə-bəl) Pronunciation Key
adj. Being such that listening is pleasurable: an undistinguished but listenable soundtrack.

You would be wrong. It is the noun form of listenable. At least, that's what the American Heritage Dictionary says.

Reception is your devise's abilty to quality pick up or not pick up a signal. Listenability referers to actually what the person hears from the reception picked up by your radio.

With reception, in this type of situation, you have ins, outs, fading, and cut offs. listenability has in it a tolerance or intolerance level for these reception problems by the listener.

I would also experience this in my last car where I had a sirius FM transmitter installed. Sometimes my station would change because someone near me had a more powerful transmitter on that frequency that I did.

FUN, it's device, not devise (this is like the third time). WTL, I go by what Webtser says before what some American Heritage or Dictionary.com says. Granted it may be an accepted word in American vernacular; It still doesn't make it a proper English word, at least according to Mirriam-Webster ( a subsidiary of Encyclopedia Brittanica and named after the man who created the first American dictionary).

Jesus fucking Christ, Genevieve, you're so goddamn dumb. Didn't you fucking go to fucking elemenary school and learn grammar and shit?

It's supposed be, "Now, I've been dropped for WashingToneLocian." You forgot the comma, MORAN.

You used "Mirriam-Webster" several times, so it's not a typo. You simply didn't know the correct spelling. You shouldn't try to play "grammar cop" when you have the gun in your own mouth with the safety off.

You are just mad because I'm right about 'listenability'. So I mispelled someone's name, big deal. At least I'm not the idiot who mispelled the word 'device' over and over again. WTL, you can go ahead and think listenability, conversate, and all the other made up words you want, are legit proper English words. I don't give a fuck.

I'm just glad that one outcome of Sirius and XM merging is that XM Radio's channel 39 is the Led Zeppelin channel.

Now I have 47 and 39 as my favorite channels.

I'm listening to 39 right now, listening to kashmir.

It actually really sucks that they took the Punk 29 channel off the air last month to replace it with that stupid 24 hour AC/DC station. I wrote to Sirius twice to complain and they completely ignored my emails. Now if it weren't for Stern, I'd actually consider canceling it. That was a really fucking lame move.

I like the idea of the Coffee House (channel 30, all acoustic versions of songs) but they play way too much crappy shit (Indigo Girls every fifth song). I wish they would mix it up a little more, with more acoustic rock than folk. The stuff that people come in and do live on Stern is awesome.

I'm way too tired to weigh in on this thread. I suppose I should since someone told someone I am married to to fuck off, but bla.

I am considering hiring a pan flute band to sit in my backseat and play when I drive... having a live band in your car is the XM Radio of the future. This is a future where Guitar Hero has taught ALL people to be musicians, therefore making it a buyer's market.

LIVE BANDS FOR ALL!

And if the pan flute guy has a roadie, then the roadie can madly change the channels on his radio to try to find the exact frequency someone has their radio set to, within the short range required to pick up the bleedoff of a satellite radio receiver, that may be tuned to Out-Q when you wanted Stern.

WTL and the rest, how about just figuring out how to pay $14 a month with a free radio? Seems easier and slightly more reliable.

I'm surprised anyone finds this "phenomenon" surprising. It's the same concept as using a police scanner... your radio, tuned to a certain frequency, crosses space with a radio wave that is at that frequency and stronger than the one before.

Yeah +1.

Although I'm irate about Sirius taking the punk channel off the air, I shudder at the the thought of having to go back to listen to local stations. Uggghhh!! There's enough great stuff on Sirius to totally make it worth the 3 or 4 bucks a week I spend for it. I'm just mad they took my go-to station away.

Like Eastsider said, they play some inconsistent lame shit on their channels sometimes. The Underground Garage channel will have awesome moments of The MC5 and Radio Birdman, and then they have the nerve to play the freekin' Travelling Wilbury's, lol.

But it's still way better than the local call letters that I barely recognize anymore.

Local radio IS what really sucks.
