Obama Wins Big in Earliest Poll Returns- Keep it up voting

DIXVILLE NOTCH, N.H. – Barack Obama came up a big winner in the presidential race in Dixville Notch and Hart's Location, N.H., where tradition of having the first Election Day ballots tallied lives on.

Democrat Obama defeated Republican John McCain by a count of 15 to 6 in Dixville Notch, where a loud whoop accompanied the announcement in Tuesday's first minutes. The town of Hart's Location reported 17 votes for Obama, 10 for McCain and two for write-in Ron Paul. Independent Ralph Nader was on both towns' ballots but got no votes.

The two biggest wastes of TV time are the NFL draft and election day coverage before the polls close. CNN spent 10 minutes interviewing "The Naked Cowboy" about his endorsement of John McCain...LIVE! If Bernard Shaw were dead, he'd be spinning in his grave...

I want to hear more about writer/philosopher/country music sensation Joe the Plumber's endorsement. He's very dynamic and complicated.

Why the dem's just DON'T GET IT!

You take a simple random sample of 1000 balls from an urn containing 120,000,000 red and blue balls, and your sample shows 450 red balls and 550 blue balls. Construct a 95% confidence interval for the true proportion of blue balls in the urn."

…Works pretty well if you're interested in hypothetical colored balls in hypothetical giant urns, or survival rates of plants in a controlled experiment, or defects in a batch of factory products. It may even work well if you're interested in blind cola taste tests. But what if the thing you are studying doesn't quite fit the balls & urns template?

• What if 40% of the balls have personally chosen to live in an urn that you legally can't stick your hand into?
• What if 50% of the balls who live in the legal urn explicitly refuse to let you select them?
• What if the balls inside the urn are constantly interacting and talking and arguing with each other, and can decide to change their color on a whim?
• What if you have to rely on the balls to report their own color, and some unknown number are probably lying to you?
• What if you've been hired to count balls by a company who has endorsed blue as their favorite color?
• What if you have outsourced the urn-ball counting to part-time temp balls, most of whom happen to be blue?
• What if the balls inside the urn are listening to you counting out there, and it affects whether they want to be counted, and/or which color they want to be?

(And what, I wonder, if all around you, every day, you are told by all of the coolest, hippest, prettiest balls that your color is mean, irrelevant, unpopular, un-cool, evil, old, incompetent and probably racist? Would you stick to your guns in the face of that, or keep your mouth shut and show ‘em when the curtain closes?)

If one or more of the above statements are true, then the formula for margin of error simplifies to
Margin of Error = Who the hell knows?

The moral of this for all would-be pollsters: if you are really interested in how many of us red and blue balls there are in this great big urn, sit back and relax, and let us show our true colors.

It may very well be that an army of glum, dispirited and pessimistic conservatives will reluctantly trudge to the polls, each one imagining they are the only remaining person in the entire country voting for McCain, and lo and behold -- they'll turn out to be a silent majority after all.

Here is the naked cowboy interview.

http://www.cnn.com/video/#/video/politics/2008/11/04/roth.naked.cowboy.cnn

For background, this is what CNN correspondent Richard Roth used to do for a living...

"Roth is a CNN "original" — one of the first employees when the network launched in 1980. He has covered a wide range of stories over the last 25 years, from the Beijing student uprising in Tiananmen Square to the fall of the Berlin Wall and the first Gulf War."

Those days are long gone, Richie!

think about that...follow the money.

listen idiot...I dont think you could find a 1 to 1 relationship between dollars spent and votes in any race at any time. its a ridiculous comparison...but if it makes you feel good in defeat...have at it.

Maybe, maybe not. It has been passing back and forth as different precincts report in.

As far as Fairfax County, Obama is winning 56% to McCain's 43%. I missed whether SE VA has fully reported in yet, but that could, but not definitely, turn the tide towards Obama.

It just went from 15,000 votes ahead to 12,000 ahead for McCain, so that last 30% reporting in from VA could change the outcome.

We'll see.

Well, maybe spending 7 times as his opponent would equate to 7 times the votes if Obama had also played the last month of the campaign running attacks ads making ridiculous accusations and smearing McCain, and got most of his votes from the low-education voter who would believe all the jingoism and fear mongering.

If Obama had been able to convince the low-education voter that McCain was a secret sleeper-cell muslim terrorist socialist, and backed with all that money, flooded the airwaves with those divisive messages, McCain wouldn't even get a single electoral vote.

Fortunately Obama only went on a few soft attacks, and left the mudslinging and divisive tactics to his desperate opponent.

Now, the real question is, was McCain's tactics prudent? Do you think any bill with his name on it will get signed into law in the next 4 to 8 years? He may have made himself an impotent senator, if Obama decides to hold a grudge.

I've been following the reporting. Most of RoVA has reported its votes. NoVA's is still trickling in. Expect Obama to win the Old Dominion and North Carolina. With any luck, we will elect Obama and send Meade to another state in one night.

I just saw, with 90% in, VA is 51% Obama, 49% McCain.

There's still a chance McCain could win VA, but it's doubtful.

Obama is going to win VA and NC. The outstanding VA votes are in NoVA.

I just imagined it.

I went to college. It didn't spark one bit of fear or resentment to imagine that, at all.

Why does it bother you so much? Not much education? Or is it your latent racism?

You, and Vince, missed my point. What relevance did interviewing the Naked Cowboy have other than to inject a "look who is voting republican?" edge to it. So it is fine to put up interviews with folks that really shouldn't be on TV in the first place (and normally he isn't). My point with Farrakhan was to say that it would have had a similar effect for conservative voters.

It was just another clear instance of media bias, and another notch in why the fairness doctrine won't make a return. If it did they would have to apply it equally to MSM - which would probably be a benefit for them from a revenue standpoint - but not something they would want to be forced into doing.

There was no "slam dunk" Vince. Sorry.

As I said before, I actually like Obama so far as the face of him we have seen presented to us. I never really liked McCain, but felt he better represented most of my policy beliefs as far as smaller government and less spending goes. Now that Obama is in, I think it is a win for our country in the short term. We will just have to see how his long-term policies turn out. But please, continue to take the reasoned, generally well researched responses I put up here and twist them or put words in my mouth I never said.
