Phone or no phone?

I almost never use my home phone but I do have DSL for my pc. Verizon tells me I have to maintain a home line to use their DSL. Since I hardly ever use my home phone due to having a cell is there another way to have DSL without paying the cost of a home phone line?

Sorry if this is a entry level computer question but I am a novice.

Thanks

It's cheaper to have the home phone AND the internet service.

If your neighborhood has fiber optics laid down, you can get phone, tv, and internet for a little over a hundred bucks.

I used to have DSL and it cost me $85 a month almost, plus Direct TV on top of that.

FIOS kicks ass.

DSL sucks. It is incredibly slow compared to other forms of broadband. I would suggest getting FIOS or digital cable. You can have the home phone (using voip) bundled with the package.

The main reason to have a home phone is for 911 access. Cellphones don't work very well with 911. Voip used to have problems with 911, but I think that may have been worked out.

I also learned that you need a landline for home security systems as they aren't compatible with VoIP. Which sucks.

Thanks for the help, forgot totally about the home security part needing a landline.

Much thanks

I used to use verizon DSL about 4 years ago and at that time they offered a plan that is $5 per month and gives you a dial tone and the ability to dial 911. I do not remember what it was called but it was pretty much just so you could get DSL.
