DAAMN, someone or someones at fcps are gonna get burned bad for this... I'd say this qualifies as a serious security breach.

There's a lot of white space in that document.

It also has demanded that Fairfax Underground remove the student information, and will take further action if that organization does not comply

Why couldn't they just ask nicely? Can't we all just get along?

say goodbye to FFU...we all know Cary doesn't remove anything from the site...even when a school went into lockdown because of something some unstable person posted here, he did nothing.

this could be the big one, guys...especially in light of recent events, that 2concerned school lockdown fiasco might get this sight pulled permanently.

Nah, one of two things will happen..

1) Cary takes it down at some point on his own

2) A court order to take it down will come, eventually, and he will take it down.

The site isn't going anywhere over this.

The internet police aren't coming to unplug all the servers.

Since the information is now public domain is it ok to download and read? it's funny how the abc7news team had a video here: http://www.wjla.com/articles/2012/12/fairfax-schools-leak-personal-student-information-posted-online-83316.html#commentformstory83316 about keeping the student information private except they provided the students names of who they interviewed. "That information is private and I don't want that getting out there" said, (full name provided by abc7), a Fairfax High School Junior.

p.s. i don't plan on downloading or viewing the information as i find it to be kind of pointless. although it would be interesting to see how people do in the AP classes. if they all really are brianiacs. i dumb ass rocks myself is.

Will the Fairfax City Police and FCPS Board seize the server logs of FFU and track down each and every IP that downloaded the file?

Will they chase down and prosecute everyone?

I can't see a court order being issued for anything except possibly the IP address of the person who uploaded the file, and only for the purpose of tracking who might have violated FCPS security. Nothing can happen to this site, and I doubt they can order this information taken down since it is now probably re-posted all over the internet and stored on thousands of people's hard drives.

Once it's out, it's out. Try un-ringing that bell.

Plus they can't prove without a doubt that a person may not have intended to download or may have unknowingly or accidentally clicked the link and it started to download automatically.

Cary said they used Tor, so they are completely anonymous. The only thing FCPS can focus on is exactly who has access to those files, and when the files were accessed.

If that is the case, they will look at who had access to the files in the FCPS database and most likely start from there. I'm sure that FCPS has a logging system of their own...

You guys are giving Fairfax County Police's computer forensics way too much credit. If you've ever dealt with them, then you'd know that they have very little capability or interest as far as things like that go. They might have a few people there who know what's up but they really don't do that kinda stuff. This isn't CSI Fairfax.

Probably anyone on the system holding the file has access to them. If it's a Unix system and a plain old print file of some type (which is what it looks like in the text version - simple mass print out), then it was probably generated and took on whatever permissions the creator typically defaults to. As far as "access logging", typically there isn't any ("paper trails" are so important to have and so often simply don't exist for numerous reasons). In fact, even the file itself will probably have a "last accessed" date that reflects the time someone looking into this incident accessed the file himself - very human nature to look at the file FIRST, then start looking at other things like "file dates"...too late!

The fact that someone used Tor to "hide" their identity suggests whoever grabbed the file knew what they were doing around computers. If this IS a Unix system there are cases where files get left in the printer spooling directories for whatever reasons - some sys admin traipsing around checking things out (maybe because of space usage or print queue checking or whatever) could have stumbled across it, said "cool!", and did the dirty. Or whatever.

I would be surprised if there is any (1) valuable logs of anything or (2) way other than timestamps on logins/logouts that will provide more than a hint of a clue to who did this. Instead, plain old interviews of any-obvious-one who could have done this plus hopes of someone having HEARD of someone who did it coming forward - like any other clueless crime - will probably be what breaks it, if anything.

In another thread, someone asked why we need assault weapons. This is why. For when the jackboots show up to sieze my PC because I read a public thread. Like the furor over ARs, this is all misdirected. They need to go after the asswipe FCPS SysAdmin who allowed the info to escape.

Fairfax Underground is an online bulletin board, not a blog, where almost anything goes. It is largely uncensored, so the content can be sexist, racist, vulgar or offensive, sometimes all in one post.
