The Truth - Why Republicans and Conservative Created the Welfare System

http://www.politicususa.com/conservatives-welfare-state.html

The need for a “welfare state” was created by conservatives and their corporate donors. They kept wages low and increased their own salaries instead.

Welfare was first established as a federal program during the Great Depression. In 1935, Congress enacted Aid to Dependent Children (ADC), a relatively modest program focused primarily on widows, orphans, divorced or deserted mothers and their children. By 1939, ADC covered only about 700,000 people, and at least two-thirds of eligible children were not covered.

The program grew slowly but steadily over the next two decades, providing assistance to about 3 million people by 1960. Growth accelerated during the 1960s and 1970s, however, and enrollment in the renamed Aid to Families with Dependent Children (AFDC) in 1994 reached a peak of 14.2 million recipients, a figure comprising 5.0 million families and 9.6 million children.

In 1992, Bill Clinton was elected president promising to "end welfare as we know it," and in 1994 a Republican Congress was elected that was determined to change the existing system. On August 22, 1996, Clinton signed the Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Act, which ended the welfare entitlement and replaced it with a new block grant providing $16.5 billion per year to states to assist the needy.

Ray Medeiros really should go back to school for a history lesson.

Who knew FDR was a Republican and the Great Depression wasn't a good enough reason to "invent" welfare?

BillsBoy "new block grant providing $16.5 billion per year to states to assist the needy"

Ah, its called redistribution of wealth hidden within welfare.
Would you rather work for your pay or receive a portion from the feds?

With CO & WA openly disreguarding federal law, I wonder how long it will be for our Commonwealth to do the same. Imagine States providing for themselves, free from the federal grip.

The Russian Gov took one too many steps also.....I wonder if History does repeat itself?

If you are implying that the Russian government took one too many steps and this led down the slippery slope to communism, you need to study Russian history and the October Revolution.

If anything, the Russian government was notorious for not taking steps.

And none of this has anything to do with Federalism and states' rights. Which, I might add is an interesting quandary for Republicans who are all about states' rights on just about every other subject.

They had workfare during the Great Depression. As soon as there were any cuts in those programs, the unemployment rate shot right back up in 1938. Why not have welfare when you have the government doling out dead-end jobs that fail to lead to a self-sustaining recovery? Haven't we been talking about that recently with the bad workers in the extended government sector?

I think this republican nutball was talking about the fall of the Soviet Union, not the Russian government, suggesting a break-up of the United States. Seems to be a wish of true patriots now that Obama won a second term.

So I guess we should all get ready to take control of public utilities and federal lands so we can become oligarchs like they did after the collapse of the Soviet Union.

I claim all the federally owned lands that have oil! Those are mine, you can't touch them. First dibs!

wrong comparison. Some have compared the current situation in the US and Europe with what occurred to the USSR and the Warsaw Pact countries in the 1980s and 1990s. The Warsaw Pact blew up before the Soviet Union. They never recovered from the 1982 great recession and the diminishing trade with the USSR.
