The real problem is the US trying to prop up Japan's economy (by maintaining a huge trade deficit with Japan. Notice there are no trade complaints lodged by the US against Japan, only against China, Korea, and others.

Korea, up until the signing of the FTA, had a 100% import duty on foreign cars.
They also frequently use protectionist measures against cheap American rice, beef and other farm products.
Basically the same stuff that Japan used to do (and still does) for many years.
Lee Myung Bak (the ROK president) has taken a lot of flak from Korean farmers for signing the FTA with the U.S.

You find that in countries that have such a homogeneous population. The Hermit Kingdom didn't get that name for nothing. They were completely isolated until 100 years ago -- and their experiences with foreigners hasn't been all that positive (Japan, China, etc.).
The younger generation is much more open, but prejudice is still really deep against anything foreign. Its not just xenophobia, but a sense of "racial purity" which is also quite deep in Japan as well.
