Substitute teacher jailed for having sex with 14-year-old boy

Police have charged a Fairfax County substitute teacher with two counts of carnal knowledge of a minor (18.2-63). On Saturday, April 9 police received a tip indicating the teacher was involved in a sexual relationship with a 14-year-old male student. The investigation led detectives to charge Dana V. Snyder, 24, of 3306 Edenvale Road in the Fairfax area, with carnal knowledge. Snyder turned herself into police on Monday, April 11 around 11 a.m. Bond was set at $5,000.
Carnal knowledge of a child between 13 and 15 years of age is a Class 4 Felony. Penalties for a Class 4 Felony can be a term of imprisonment of not less than two years, nor more than ten years, and a fine of not more than $100,000.

A 24-year-old woman who worked as a substitute teacher in Fairfax County public schools has been accused of having a sexual relationship with a 14-year-old student, police said yesterday.
Dana V. Snyder of Fairfax had sexual contact with the boy March 26 and again April 4, police said. She was charged with two counts of carnal knowledge of a minor, a felony.
Police and schools officials declined to say which school the boy attends, citing efforts to protect his privacy. Schools spokesman Paul Regnier said Snyder began working as a substitute teacher for the school system in September 2003 and has worked at several schools. Police said they do not believe that any other children were involved.
Snyder is the second adult associated with the Fairfax school system to be accused in recent months of inappropriate contact with children. In March, Kenneth Bayer, 88, of Fairfax, who volunteered at three elementary schools, was charged with sexually abusing a teenage girl.
Last week, Ricki Harvey, 55, a principal at Dogwood Elementary, one of the schools where Bayer volunteered, was charged with two misdemeanor counts of failing to report suspected child abuse. Police said Harvey had been told about the suspected abuse by Bayer but did not report it to authorities.
Snyder, who turned herself in to police yesterday morning, was released on a personal recognizance bond, authorities said. No one answered the door at her Edenvale Road house yesterday afternoon.
The investigation began Saturday when police received a tip about a relationship between Snyder and the student. Officer Richard Henry, a police spokesman, said the alleged incidents did not take place on school grounds. He said the investigation has been concluded.
Regnier said that the school is conducting its own investigation and that Snyder will not be used as a substitute teacher while the case is pending. He said all substitute teachers submit fingerprints and undergo a criminal background check.
