A Gainesville woman suffered non life-threatening injuries after being shot at her child’s soccer game Sunday evening, police said.
Police responded to George Hellwig Memorial park, 14418 Bristow Road, at 5:11 p.m. Sunday to investigate a shooting, Prince William police spokesman Jonathan Perok said.
A 43-year-old Gainesville woman told police she was sitting in a chair watching her child’s game when “she felt a sharp pain to her right thigh,” Perok said in a news release.
The woman thought she had been struck by a BB or other projectile and went to an area hospital for treatment, police said.
At the hospital, doctors determined that the woman had actually been struck with a small-caliber bullet, possibly a .22 round, Perok said.
No one at the game reported hearing a gunshot or seeing a weapon, police said.
On July 4, a 7-year-old boy was killed when a stray bullet struck him in the head as he watched fireworks with his dad in Chesterfield County outside Richmond. Police still have not determined where that bullet came from.
