An Alexandria man held at the Loudoun County Adult Detention Center, or ADC, was charged after damaging a cinder block in a holding cell on Sept. 23.
Members of the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office discovered that 23-year-old Yonathan Melaku managed to damage one of the walls using what the agency described as an “instrument.”
Sheriff’s Office spokesman Kraig Troxell was unable to elaborate on what Melaku – arrested for his alleged involvement in a string of Leesburg burglaries – may have used, citing it was part of the investigation.
Melaku made news recently for allegedly firing shots at the Pentagon and other military targets — which he awaits charges on — and pleaded guilty on Sept. 2 to car thefts in Leesburg.
During a May 26 incident, police believed Melaku smashed the windows of 27 cars. He faced two counts of grand larceny — and could spend a potential 20 years in prison, likely to lengthen now due to the escape attempt.
Melaku became the suspect in five overnight shootings at public buildings, including the Marine Corps Museum (twice) and the Pentagon, which started in October 2010.
He is also a former U.S. Marine Corps reservist.
The damage to the ADC has since been fixed.
“It was obviously very minimal,” Troxell said.
Authorities charged Melaku with damaging the facility and possession of an instrument to aid escape.
The ADC, constructed with the maximum security construction standards, was placed on temporary lockdown during the incident as a precaution.
