Original story:
A Loudoun County Sheriff’s captain was struck by a vehicle Sept. 19 on Route 7, but is expected to recover.
Captain Brian Courneya was traveling east on Route 7 at approximately 5:20 a.m. when a deer plowed into the side of his cruiser. Courneya activated his emergency equipment and pulled to the side of the road.
He exited his vehicle, carrying a flashlight, and walked the median of the roadway, attempting to locate the deer.
As Courneya walked along the medium, Craig H. Trout, 62, of Lovettsville, swerved his 1999 Jeep Cherokee, which had come upon slow-moving traffic, to avoid a rear-end collision.
The vehicle crossed over the lane and struck Courneya. The driver was charged with reckless driving for failure to maintain control.
“Fortunately, it was a glancing blow,” Loudoun Sheriff Steve Simpson said. “He should be OK, he could have been killed.”
Courneya, a 22-year veteran of the Sheriff’s Office, was taken to the Cornwall Campus of Inova Loudoun Hospital, where he was treated for non-life-threatening injuries. He is currently the commander of the Central Loudoun Sheriff’s Station.
