Last week, Inova Health System announced that its work force would be reduced by 117 employees; 84 would be via attrition, while the remaining 33 would be laid off. With a total system workforce of 15,534 employees, based on its 2010 Community Report, the reduction represents only .75% of the total workforce.
Mr. Tony Raker, a spokesman for Inova Health System, assured the Purcellville Gazette & Loudoun Today that the reduction would not affect Lovettsville's future Urgent Care Facility nor Purcellville's existing facility at the corner of Hirst and Hatcher. He went on to say that the objective of the reduction in force was to "streamline" the management layers between upper management and the patient. "Currently there are 12 layers of management, now we will have only 8 levels moving forward," he shared. He went on to say that this will help with improved communications, more flexibility and more efficient decision making and implementation as it relates to care. Only two of the employees reduced were from Loudoun. The 117 positions were mostly management in both the system and operating units of Inova Health System.
While the 13% reduction in upper management will both streamline and reduce expenses, Raker states it was not about the savings, "Our goal is to reduce bureaucracy, positioning our most senior leadership closer to the patient." He additionally stated that this will also "improve quality, safety and patient experience."
A recent visit to the Inova Health System career website made no mention of the layoffs. However, under the tab of Corporate/Administration jobs, the Gazette found 15 job openings. Overall, there were over 75 positions open from nursing to clinical research.
