Loudoun County Expands Recycling Program

Loudoun County operates nine public recycling centers for residential and business recycling, and has expanded the program to allow more types of materials accepted for recycling. Each Loudoun County Recycling Drop-off Center now accepts the following materials:

Plastic containers (#1 through #7), including bottles, jugs, wide-mouth tubs, and microwave meal trays; aluminum cans, aluminum foil, and aluminum pie pans; steel/tin cans and lids; aerosol cans (empty); glass bottles and bottle caps, jars and metal tops; newspapers; magazines; mail; catalogs; telephone books; paperback and hardcover books; office paper; computer printouts; brochures; colored paper; non-metallic wrapping paper; shredded paper (bagged only); paper bags; corrugated cardboard (flattened and all non- paper packaging removed); paperboard (cereal/snack boxes/frozen food boxes, etc); and aseptic/gable-top milk and juice cartons (emptied and rinsed clean).

Common items not accepted include any type of styrofoam packaging and styrofoam peanuts; plastic bags; plastic buckets, flower pots, planters, shrink wrap; motor oil and antifreeze containers; pool chemical and other chemical containers; fuel cans and compressed gas cylinders; light bulbs; beverage glasses; cooking glass; pottery; construction materials; yard waste; paper contaminated with food waste; electronics; and garbage.

Loudoun County Recycling Drop-off Centers are located in Sterling, Arcola, Leesburg (at the Loudoun County Landfill), Lucketts, Lovettsville, Hillsboro, Hamilton, Philomont, and Middleburg. Most sites are open from dawn until dusk, except for Lucketts (Saturdays only, 8 a.m. – 12 noon) and the landfill (Monday – Saturday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.).

Curbside refuse and recycling collection services are provided by incorporated towns, some homeowners associations, and directly by one of the many private, permitted waste collection companies operating in the county.
