Loudoun County is Spared the Worst of Hurricane Irene
http://www.loudoun.gov/Default.aspx?tabid=3877

Emergency management officials report only minor impacts from Hurricane Irene in Loudoun County as it moved through the Metropolitan Washington, D.C. region. They are pleased that county residents and others in the region heeded the call from elected officials and emergency management officials to remain indoors while the storm passed through the area. This allowed first responders the ability to focus on the situation at hand.

Throughout Saturday and into the early hours of Sunday morning, the Loudoun County Emergency Operations Center and county officials monitored the storm with their regional partners. They are happy to report that other than fallen trees, the county appears to have sustained little or no damage and no major flooding. Emergency call volume has been light to normal. At the peak of the storm, no more than 360 residents were without power. Virginia Dominion Power and Novec report that power has been restored to many of those customers.

The county did field one mutual aid request from the City of Alexandria in the days leading up to the event. A swift water rescue team was dispatched to Alexandria, while other swift water rescue resources remained in Loudoun for county responses. The team dispatched to Alexandria has since returned. Additional mutual aid requests may surface Sunday and into the week as other impacted areas request assistance through the Virginia Department of Emergency Management.

Emergency officials will be working through a complete assessment of the county during the daylight hours Sunday. Residents are reminded to report and stay away from any downed power lines and also stay away from any standing water. Whether you are driving or walking, if you come to a flooded road, stop and do not cross. With water across the roadway, you cannot always determine the depth of the water or the condition of the road under the water. Six inches of moving water can knock a person down and a mere two feet of water can move a large vehicle such as a bus.

Irene continues to move up the coast of the United States. The storm should be out of the region by Sunday afternoon with continued breezy conditions throughout the day.

Hurricane Irene was a cakewalk compared to the rain we got from Lee!
