A crash with a pick-up truck on Ashburn Road cost a 55-year-old Leesburg man his life on Aug. 1. The Sheriff’s Office has charged the driver with failing to yield the right of way.
Kenneth Maurice Irish II was traveling north on Ashburn road near Faulkner Parkway shortly after 5 p.m. Irish was riding his 1998 Harley Davidson motorcycle when he was involved in a crash with a 2007 Ford F150 truck.
The truck driver, David Wayne Schrader, 49, of Stephens City, was traveling westbound on Faulkner Parkway and attempted to cross the intersection.
A preliminary investigation revealed that Schrader did not yield properly. Additionally, Irish’s helmet was a “novelty-type helmet, not approved for highway operation,” according to the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office.
After a more thorough investigation by the Sheriff’s Office Crash Reconstruction team and collaboration with the Commonwealth’s Attorney, Schrader was charged on Aug. 8.
Irish was taken to Inova Hospital’s Lansdowne Campus, where he succumbed to his injuries.

The braindeads in this county traffic and road dept and VDOT are the real blame for this. There should of been a four way stop sign from day one.
It took a child dying just down the road from this at waxpool and ashburn village dr before they put a four way stop there. Noooo VDOT and the county wanted to study that intersection for a stop sign when there were accidents there several times a wee. What was there to study??? the four way stops signs went up immediately when that child died. Seems they did not need a study afterall.
now we have a death at this new intersection which should of had 4 way stop signs from day one.
Yes the article said the pickup driver did not stop correctly but if there had been a four way stop the perhaps the motorcycle driver even with a

There are times when people just don’t stop on ashburn village blvd * waxpool rd x’n. I almost missed narrowly when someone drove thru n my 6 mon old was with me. Hate the stop signs. I missed again near the big broadlands sign on ashburn village blvd a month back. People just don’t seem to pay attention to stop signs when there are no vehicles ahead of them.

The article did not say the pick up truck driver did not stop correctly, it said “yield properly.” The pick up stopped at the stop sign. The motorcycle signaled a right turn and slowed but at the last second went straight ahead and accelerated hitting the truck. There should be a 4 way stop in any case.

As an immediate member of Ken’s family I can tell you that it would be cathartic to be able to be angry at the driver of the truck or even Ken. Frustratingly, I cannot. The driver did what 99.9% of us do at some point every single time we drive - miss something. Ken did the best he could and I know that because he always did, but he missed something too. That is the formula for an accident.
I take offense from the articles written indicating that somehow his selection of headgear was a cause for the accident. It was an ancillary piece of information that had nothing to do with the manner in which the accident occured and yet the way the articles are written one would think differently. He lived all over the US (and abroad) and I suspect his gear was appropriate at the time he purchased it in the place he purchased it.
He served his country and his family honorably, he was a great friend, brother, son, father, and brother in arms. He was a soldier, an artist, an entrepenuer and a great story teller. He loved his life and his family and never met a stranger.
My large extended family is suffering this loss deeply, and we recognize that the family of the driver of the truck is experiencing his own measure of grief. Loss of life is a harsh penalty for a momentary lapse of attention. Our hearts are broken.
Live life as if every day is your last… because someday it will be and your family does not want it to be today. PAY ATTENTION.
