The sheriff's office is warning residents about a scam targeting Medicare recipients.
According to the sheriff's office, a Loudoun resident recently received a phone call from someone posing as a salesperson from a medical equipment provider. The caller told the resident they had been approved for a scooter paid for by Medicare and then attempted to obtain their Medicare information to include their social security number.
Sheriff's office investigators have determined the subject on the phone was not an employee of the medical equipment company for which he claimed to be working. The subject used a voiceover IP number of 571-207-9014 and is believed to have been involved in prior solicitation attempts that have been reported to the company.
The sheriff's office is reminding Loudoun residents to never respond to unsolicited requests for personal information received over the phone-even if the request appears to come from a legitimate institution with whom they do business. Anyone who believes they have had contact with the same subject or call number should contact Investigator C.A. Perinis of the Financial Crimes Section at 703-777-0475.
