Luck Stone Ashburn Quarry's New Tunnel

Interesting?... Luck Stone's-Ashburn quarry has been granted rights to build a tunnel under Goose Creek... off of Belmont Ridge Rd. near the old W&OD railhead next to W&OD trail. Area was used in late 50's to early 60's for rail off-load of excavation from Mt. Weather facility toward providing agreggate stone used in eventual construction of Dulles Airport... W&OD Railroad was kept running for that purpose after freight and passenger needs, subsided. That, in addition and separate from quarry operations that coninue until present day. Long-rumored that a 'drivable' subterranean tunnel exists from Mt. Weather to Dulles Airport and onward to DC and beyond. Wondering if this additional construction has any relation to the aforementioned?...

That is the tunnel under the bike path and not Goose Creek. It has been there longer than the 45 years I have lived in Loudoun.

An interesting page! The cost of constructing a subterranean tunnel by Luck Stone from one of their Ashburn sites under Goose Creek to the Luck Stone Leesburg quarry/site is astronomical to say the least. A drivable tunnel large enough to permit the passing of heavy equipment (large trucks etc.) is odd. An engineering/construction project on this scale would cost a fortune. Can't see that mining aggregate stone between all of the Luck quarry's could possibly be worth this effort. There's something more to this story beyond aggregate stone mining/hauling as original poster suggested.

A rail offload from Mt Weather? That's pretty neat considering the rail line ended a tad short of the actual mountain. Oh I know, it was a partial tunnel, one them secret ones the guvment dug all over the U.S.

Luck Stone's completed tunnel under Goose Creek between their Leesburg and Ashburn operations consist of a conveyor belt operation to transfer mined material. It's not large enough for vehicle's to traverse.

Coarse aggregate refuse mined from the Mt. Weather facility during construction were trucked (many, many truckloads) to a receiving operation established about 1/8 mile before the Bluemont Terminal and between Mt. Weather and Bluemont/Town. Rock refuse were hauled-off toward the East via rail to a receiving facility near Belmont Ridge Rd (the present day Luck Stone quarry operation.) Rock aggregate were offloaded then loaded into trucks for final delivery to the Dulles Airport construction project.

Problem is the W&OD was abandoned west of Purcellville in the 1930s and the tracks were pulled up. Rebuilding the line back to Bluemont and upgrading the line between Purcelleville and Trap Rock would have attracted as much attention as just using trucks to haul the aggregate all the way to Dulles.

Historical fact provided by 'Passing Through' finally
puts an end to this ridiculous thread.

Speaking of the old WO&D railroad spur that went to Dulles while it was under construction, I can't seem to find the route that it took on my topo maps.

Can anyone help? Thank you.
