One man died Sunday and two others were seriously injured in a head-on collision on Route 9 outside of Purcellville.

The drivers of two cars collided about 6:40 p.m. near the Daley Farm Lane intersection in the Wheatland area.

According to Virginia State Police, a 2010 Toyota Yaris was travelling east on Route 9 when it swerved across the road striking a westbound 1997 Toyota 4Runner head-on.

A witness told authorities the driver of the Yaris was “pre-occupied with a handheld electronic device just moments before the crash,” according to a Virginia State Police report.

Satish Mallavaram, 36, of Ashburn, was driving the Yaris and died at the scene.

Two others, husband and wife, Jose Castro-Rivas, 39, and Anna M. Castro, 48, both of Vienna, were driving the Toyota 4Runner and were airlifted to Inova Fairfax Hospital with serious injuries. The couple is still at Inova Fairfax with life-threatening injuries, authorities said.

Authorities said both Castro-Rivas and Castro were wearing seat belts.

The crash closed down Route 9 at the intersection of Route 287 for hours while crews from Purcellville Fire and Rescue, the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office and Virginia State Police worked the scene.

The crash remains under investigation by the Virginia State Police Accident Reconstruction Team and Virginia State Police.
