Virginia State Police Investigate Fatal Rt. 9 Crash 2 comments

One driver is dead and two other motorists hospitalized following a head-on crash on Rt. 9 near Wheatland last night.

According to Virginia State Police, the crash happened around 6:40 p.m. Sunday when the driver of an eastbound Toyota Yaris crossed over the centerline of the two-lane road near the Rt. 287 intersection, striking a Toyota 4runner.

The driver of the Yaris was pronounced dead at the scene. His identity was withheld pending notification of family members.

The driver of the 4runner Anna M. Casto, 48, and passenger Jose Castro-Rivas, 39, both of Vienna, were flow to Inova Fairfax Hospital for treatment.

The crash remains under investigation by the State Police Accident Reconstruction Team. A witness told police that the Yaris driver appeared to be using a handheld electronic device, possibly a cellphone, just before crossing into oncoming traffic.

That section of Rt. 9 reopened to traffic just before 11 p.m.
