Loudoun County School Board Chairman John Stevens (Potomac) announced Tuesday night that with the passing of fellow Board Member J. Warren Geurin, there is now a vacant seat that must be filled for the remainder of the term.
“There is a vacancy currently on the Loudoun County School Board and it is necessary for this board to appoint someone to fill the remainder of the term set to expire on Dec. 31 of this year,” Stevens said. “There are a number of requirements that are a part of our policy and together with Ms. Godfrey and staff we have worked to ensure we have a plan to fulfill those policies.”
Stevens went on to mention the vacancy will be advertised in local papers next week and the plan also calls for a public hearing to be conducted June 1. Potential candidates will be given the opportunity to state their case for five minutes during the hearing. The Board will then meet after the hearing to ask questions of the candidates.
“At that meeting and after we have heard the public hearing, the board will have opportunities to ask questions of candidates for that appointment,” Stevens said. “At our 2nd Tuesday board meeting June 14 we will have an action item the filling of that vacancy.”
According to state law, the board has 45 days to name a successor and June 14 is the deadline.
Should the board not appoint a filler of the vacancy by that date or choose not to appoint a successor, the courts will appoint someone to fill the seat.
